Ain't heard shyt about TPAB since it came out. No hot singles. King c00nta was probably the worst Kendrick song I ever heard besides i. What say you Coli folks? Is it back to the drawing board for K Dot? At this point you'd be lying if you said his album was a success. The hype didn't even last a month.

He said something stupid in an article, that isn't even remotely close to the "message" behind the album. That'd be like me saying "I won't listen to Tetsuo & Youth because Lupe conflated trayvon's death with Hip Hop and said he isn't making music for "Black people" just "People".
:russ: Don't lie to yourself homie. That shyt is littered throughout the album, institutionalized, the blacker the berry, i, the list goes on. I'll admit the message behind i is good but the rest can :camby:

People will believe what they want to believe but even the most ardent kendrick
hater wouldn't find "respectability politics" in a song like "i" or "institutionalized", hell even "The Blacker The Berry"
is a stretch.

Nah, this album got more love from the critics then the people, the opposite of IWW.

Exact OPPOSITE. It Was Written was celebrated commercially from jump out the gate, selling 2+ million, enormously successful singles, and being Nas' highest selling album to date. But it wasn't received critically in the beginning

To Simp a Butterfly is not celebrated commercially, and critically. Kendrick stans grasping for straws tryna align themselves with Nas :dead:

While TPAB is reverse from IWW in that regard it seems the same cause both albums were polarizing and makes nikkas wonder what route Kendrick will go next time, or at least I am. Go back to having radio capable/accessible shyt on albums or stay on the path TPAB has him on?

How does "I love myself" directly translate to "Respectability Politics" ?
And it fits in with the concept of the album, he was coming to terms
with "loving himself" after feeling so conflicted, he kinda talks about this
through several songs.
"u","Alright" and "institutionalized" bolster my point :yeshrug:

I mean you could definitely take it that way but when you look at the work as a whole and
look at the lyrics in the song outside of it's hook then I think "Respectability Politics" hardly factors into the overall point he was trying to make.

I mean read these lyrics it doesn't reflect "Act a certain way so that society will
respect you". It doesn't say that...at all actually :ld:

The lyrics (no hook included here):
I done been through a whole lot
Trial, tribulation, but I know God

The Devil wanna put me in a bow tie
Pray that the holy water don't go dry

As I look around me
So many motherfukkers wanna down me
But an enemigo never drown me

In front of a dirty double-mirror they found me

They wanna say it's a war outside, bomb in the street
Gun in the hood, mob of police
Rock on the corner with a line for the fiend
And a bottle full of lean and a model on the scheme uh

These days of frustration keep y'all on tuck and rotation (Come to the front)
I duck these cold faces, post up fi-fie-fo-fum basis
Dreams of reality's peace
Blow steam in the face of the beast

Sky could fall down, wind could cry now
Look at me motherfukker I smile

(Crazy)
(What you gon' do?)
Lift up your head and keep moving, (Keep moving) turn the mic up
(Haunt you)

Peace to fashion police, I wear my heart
On my sleeve, let the runway start

You know the miserable do love company
What do you want from me and my scars?

Everybody lack confidence, everybody lack confidence
How many times my potential was anonymous?

How many times the city making me promises?
So I promise this, nikka

I went to war last night
With an automatic weapon, don't nobody call a medic
I'mma do it till I get it right

I went to war last night (Night, night, night, night, night)
I've been dealing with depression ever since an adolescent

Duckin' every other blessin', I can never see the message
I could never take the lead, I could never bob and weave
From a negative and letting them annihilate me
And it's evident I'm moving at a meteor speed

Finna run into a building, lay my body...

Breh, "gangbanging made me kill a nikka blacker than me", the whole damn album is littered with lines like this. I'll admit, sonically I fukks wit a good number of songs, but I'll be chilling, than this nikka say some shyt like that and it ruins it for me. How you gon make an album about the black experience, yet 80% of the songs is telling black people to do better?
