Been a wrap for a minute. His ego was his downfall and I honestly get it, but the success he found in his lane and the validation he got from people he admires (bro had Seinfeld, a fukking billionaire, doing outros/intros on his shyt and he even hosted a marathon iirc) should have been validation enough.

But I feel him. He's incredibly talented and everybody knows it, but I think his lyrical depth and persona makes him far less endearing than somebody like Cole who positions themselves with his fanbase. Cole had the same problem of being too artsy/rappy while trying to become mainstream until he found and settled into his lane with his core audience.

You can't consider yourself as a poet and expect that to push you to success alone. When he tries to do radio shyt with the right people, he hits it out the park but he seemingly doesn't want to do it or he burned enough bridges that he isn't able to. His catalogue is full of actual gems, like he legitimately makes better songs than a lot of people out right now; he's just so offputting that it's hard for people not into him to look into him

Like if Cole didn't have such a steady and dedicated fanbase, that he worked his ass off to maintain, then he would be in the same boat for the most part because social media would have you thinking people HATE Cole and the shyt he raps about. Wale never put that time into nurturing his fanbase and instead went on the offensive towards everyone

I feel for him. And it's wild seeing him go from being constantly hyped to this. My nikka was ahead of his time doing collabs with Gaga and shyt

Jesus this might be the REALEST shyt ever written about Wale

Appreciate that, bro. I've been a fan since those Nike boots days and it always hurt to see him flounder like this but it started making sense unfortunately

Yup, Cole hit the nail on the head. Crazy people tried to pit them against each other after this like Cole wasn't saying what wale needed to hear.

After Budden was talking about all this potential beefs involving this class, it made me wonder how many involved Wale/Wale coming at people. I don't think Cole and Drake ever had serious beef with each other. I can see Kendrick having beef with Cole early on and later with Drake, but I can see Wale having beef with all 3 as each one got bigger and bigger as he fell out the spotlight.

It's weird remembering that wale is in the same class and had a bigger spotlight than Cole and Kendrick for a long ass time until that single with Gaga flopped. the animosity between those 4 must have been nuts at the time

I remember Wale on Breakfast Club i think saying that no collab between him and Kendrick had happened nor WOULD happen and kind of blaming the TDE camp for it not happening. Then Punch clowned him for it on Twitter

This is how I see the tiers of new generation rappers

Tier A

Kendrick
Drake and his writers
J.Cole
Childish Gambino

Tier 2

Meek Mill
Big Sean
Wale
Kid Cudi

Donald Glover AKA Childish Gambino burst into the top tier last year when This Is America became a smash and he became the first rapper to win Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year. His new album is almost guaranteed to be a smash whenever it drops.

Yeah, i don't see why TDE would hold back that specific collab if they let Kendrick rock with Cole and Drake. And from what it seems, Wale has a tendency to misread things and not tell the whole truth.

I'm glad to see the Gambino love. because the internet is still my favorite album from him and I would love to see him get into that type of bag again. His versatility is insane and makes me wonder what he has planned next. He's grown a lot from rapping about Asian girls and having corny punchlines.

My only fear is that he stunted his own growth by coming at a good amount of rappers a few years ago and talking about how afraid they were of him. I feel the arrogance but he wasn't really anybody at that time musically, now that he is, I can see people feeling a certain way about that and not wanting to give him anymore attention.

But that list sounds about right. Idk if I would place Cudi that high off lyrics alone but I can see it. While I think a lot of rappers could bar him up, he can emotionally touch people saying far less which is important and understated.

Everybody from Drake to Cole have given Gambino public props over the last three years. I’m sure any of them would love to collab given the opportunity. Plus the shyt Gambino was saying was just rap shyt, not even on the level on K.Dot’s Control verse.

And my list wasn’t based on just lyrics. If that were the case I wouldn’t have placed Drake on the list at all as he doesn’t write his own shyt, and lyrically Wale is definitely a Tier A rapper.

I did the list based on accolades, sales, impact, visibility, longevity, discography , classic songs, talent and lyrics.

Kendrick has all of it.
Drake has top tier sales, accolades, longevity, classic songs, and if we want to count So Far Gone as a classic then I won’t argue

Cole has top tier sales, longevity, classic songs, talent, lyrics, impact, and again if someone wants to argue The Warm Up as a classic i wouldn’t argue

Childish Gambino has mid tier sales, but has accolades, classic songs, talent like a MUTHAfukkA, lyricism, visibility, and impact

There’s a lane for this song. I like when Wale do shyt like this and don’t be trying too hard like other rappers. He should just stay here and eat all that he can.
