Just because you get a generous portion of food doesn't mean you have finish it all at one time.

^Not Jamaican.

Cleaning your plate is a cultural feature. Low key, cleaning your plate is poor people culture the world over.

Jamaicans eat Cow Foot and Ox Tail* - nothing ever wastes. Tongue and Liver were mainstays growing up.

What's happening to Jamaican waistlines - be they on the Island or "a foreign" - is the slow creep of Western Foods, Western Portion Sizes, Western cheapness, and Western availability. This is on top of whatever they're putting in the water and soil, and how it's packaged in plastic. Throw in "demand generation" aka advertising and it's a done deal.

Plenty of thin peoples (Japan for instance) eat mostly carbs - but the food environment has changed. China and The Phillippines for example, have gotten fat and unhealthy despite being surrounded by traditional foods that taste good. It doesn't take much for the Western Diet to infiltrate and sicken a population.

*No one has ever heard of a Jamaican T-Bone or Rib Eye, hmmm wonder where the rest of the cow went...hmmm

anytime a meal has multiple starches. rice, potatoes, beans, bananas and plantains. on the same plate. You know its probably not health conscious.
I always limit to one starchy dish. and serve that with 1 protein, and one leafy or green veggie. Rice & green Peas > Rice & Beans for example

To be fair, he insinuated that he’s Chinese.

It makes sense why our people eat all that goddamn food though. Factor in the “western diet” pros and cons, and folks not working on the farm all day to burn it off anymore & you get a :flabbynsick: population

I was having this conversation with my mother, during the early 90’s she was a secretary of Karl Samuda’s (former minister of agriculture of Jamaica). A lot the nutritional inadequacies of the slave ration based Jamaican diet were further entrenched among the post-emancipation peasant population because of restrictions set on commerce (they weren’t codified into law from what I know but they were heavy-handedly enforced), for instance my grandmother told me when she was a higgler in the 40’s and 50’s, Black Jamaican’s in the countryside were relegated to selling ground provisions. Fast forward to now and it’s heavily reflected on the plates of the masses of Jamaica. Jamaica’s a former sugar plantation colony and agrarian society, these are the remnants. Same can be said with confectioneries and treats, they’re loaded with exorbitant amounts of sugar. Bustas, buns, grater cakes, tamarind balls, and peanut punch are too damn sweet.

I'm from Duhaney Park in Kingston. Been living in NYC since 1977. I grew up under that clean your plate slave minded nikkardly thinking. The time and energy my family wasted trying to force me to clean my plate was their own terrorism. By the time I was about 12 the same people who once forced me to clean my plate, were now calling me gravalicious.

As an adult I never felt the need or desire to gorge myself and refused to do it. Neither did I torment my children to finish large amounts of food in one sitting. As I had learned from my own experiences and college. Children will not starve themselves and their stomachs are roughly the size of their fists.

The biggest problem with the foods today is that processed foods are far more popular by demand. I don't fukk with fast food restaurants. My fast food is a Patty. One of the worst things people ever started to consume is bio-diesel fuel rebranded as cooking oil. That is a part of why we have so many fat fukks and Alzheimer's is a roughly 45 years old.

People don’t eat that type of food everyday.

Like you look at a soul food plate and people say “oh yams, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, dressing, and fried turkey is bad for you” well yeah it’s bad for you if you eat it everyday. Most people don’t eat that every damn day.

Jamaicans ain’t eating take out plate food everyday day either.
