they were shoved onto us because Democrats can't make up their minds on anything so they settled. Republicans CHOSE Trump. Democrats throughout have just been like "if it gets Trump out, fukk it." We chose Obama and that worked out tremendously. Democrats can't find anyone they collectively like and that has been a problem for decades.
In 6 decades, Democrats have loved 3 guys damn near unconditionally:
JFK
Clinton
Obama
That's not quite accurate.
In 2000 Bush stole the election. Gore won and should have been president however he conceded too early. Gore may have won outright if he leaned on Clinton throughout the campaign.
In 2004 John Kerry was a poor choice.
In 2016 Hillary basically owned the DNC (and funded them) and everyone in the democratic establishment basically thought it's finally Hillary's time, let's give it to her. So Hillary grew overconfident. And they severely underestimated Trump. At this point everyone hated business as usual neoliberal politics and nobody will ever represent that as much as Hillary Clinton.
In 2020, Obama had to finger wag the over candidates to fall in line behind Bident to prevent Bernie Sanders from winning the nomination. Biden barely beat "Let's inject bleach y'all" Donald Trump by 40K votes.
In 2024 Biden dragged his feat on running in 2024 after promising to only serve a single term. Then Kamala became the candidate without a primary, foregoing party democracy and ensuring the best candidate would face Trump.
Kamala was not the best candidate. I doubt Newsom or Whitmer would have fared much better either.
So I don't think a candidate needs to be beloved by all wings of the party. They just need to be competent. Gore has mostly competent (again should have leaned on Clinton) and he did win but failed to become president. Kerry was not strong enough to unseat a sitting president.
And since Obama there has not been a competent Democratic candidate who won purely on their own merits.
