People online are crazy man lol.Def Comedy Jam, Nutty Professor, just because his comedy blew up in white spaces, doesn’t mean black ppl didn’t fukk with him. Ppl are taking his meteoric rise to fame outside of black spaces, and using it against him, because white ppl are riding with him in the Netflix scandal. Just read through this thread, and you can already tell what they’re upset about when they say Dave’s comedy is safer for white spaces.
He came up under Mooney, and Pryor. All comics who’s comedy gave them rooms in white areas and before white crowds.
Right! My dude Pryor basically put Robin Williams and Sandra Bernhardt on. Dude got him an NBC show even though it wasn’t around long lol. I bought it on dvd and it’s excellent especially for that time period. Anyway I guess Chappelle would be ok with people if he only did that “white peoples do this while black people do that” type comedy.

If you have a hater agenda you'll spin it that way. If you understand/study comedy you'll know that it's always been a 'thing'. It just never got highlighted until cacs latched on to his recent material as some kinda crusade for 'anti-pc' culture.
And he has still been pointing up how irresponsible white folks are with his comedy.
He did Def Jam a couple times but he's not a 'def jam' comedian and was kind of critical to how one note a lot of the material was there. That was not the crowd that propelled him to success and that's okay.

Truth be told, Comedy Central has been known as a network targeting 18-49 white males throughout its history.
And no, its not like Chappelle chose BET or TV One over them for his show (or the other way around...).
Also, his main creative partner for the Chappelle Show on Comedy Central was Neal Brennan.
Ppl keep running with this Neal Brennen shyt as if having white writers takes away from your popularity amongst black ppl. I don’t know anyone in 2003 who was like “I can’t fukk with the Chappelle Show. It’s corny, and the jokes take on the worst tropes about black ppl, and he has white writers behind the scenes.” That was only ever a thing amongst other somewhat popular black comedians who didn’t have as far of a rise in white spaces as Chappelle and lashed out. Most black ppl weren’t on that kinda time back then. We laughed, kept it moving, and then we’d watch other black comedians on the chitlin or urban circuits like Comic View, Kings Of Comedy, Def Comedy, Bad Boys of Comedy, etc. Being a fan of Chappelle vs being a fan of more “traditional” black comedians was never an either or thing. That’s just a recent narrative because ppl are mad and because of identity politics.

He never appeared on comic view which is why he use to shyt on them with his show(remember the whole it gets comic view gag when a scenario came up of things people wouldn’t pay to see?) Like Chris Rock, his main writing partner was a cac so all those black WS and nikkar skits were written by whites. Most of his early movies were cheesy white stoner comedies. Folks acting like Dave is Robin Harris or Bernie Mac.

Nobody is acting he’s Robin Harris or Bernie Mac, folks are revising his comedic history like he’s Key And Peele or Childish Gambino. He was malleable and thought a lot of other comedy shows were corny. That didn’t make him any less popular with black ppl. People are equating his malleability with not being able to hold down a black crowd or not having black viewership. How easy is it to get on Def Comedy Jam in the 90s, Irregardless if that was his vehicle to stardom or not?
