if your argument is he had black fans before then, ok then what's the point of even talking about core audiences. I'm a hannibal burress fan, i'm black. I wouldn't say his core audience is black just cause i like him cause i literally never hear black ppl i know reference or act like they care about his comedy. it is what it is. i don't even know what the problem is with admitting that dave had a niche, mostly white, audience back then. it's like his black fans get offended with being lumped in with cacs or something.

edit: maybe "core audience" is the wrong way to frame this cause it's not about 99% of your fans being black, more so whether or not you have any relevance in black pop culture. as mentioned people like pryor, paul mooney, etc had plenty of white fans but also plenty of relevance among black people. dave simply didn't have that to a large degree in the late 90s/early 2000s

I don’t know who y’all were hanging around, but I went to the theaters with my black friends to watch Hal Baked.

Then I watched Killing em Softly on HBO with my black friends.

Just cause he had universal appeal early in his career doesn’t mean he wasn’t popular with a black audience. He was a prodigy who broke into mainstream rooms without having to spend years proving himself in black only rooms. Same thing happened with Eddie and Chris. They found success early.

There were 2 waves of people that said this. The first was black people in the 90s/2000s. Chappelle and Chris Rock were called "crossover" comedians. Could be because they had jokes that were more than just p*ssy-weed-hood stuff. There is always a section of black people that wont fukk with you if white people fukk with you too.

This new wave of people who say this are the feminist, lgbt, blavity crowd desperately trying to cancel Dave. They call him an "alt right" comedian because he makes fun of trans and metoo and all that. Its dishonest because more black crowds love those jokes than anybody else.

Lol at the spin job of Dave being from the richest part of Maryland because he grew up in Silver Spring before it got nice. He didn’t grow up in Potomac or Bethesda. And he didn’t go to private school.

Imagine telling a nikka that grew up right outside DC and attended DC public schools in the late 80s, that he hasn’t live the black experience.

So you gonna work at a job that pays less and your career work would be less appreciated because it has more black people?

BET and TV One do not simply have "more black people" as workers.

They were both founded by black business people (Robert Johnson and Cathy Hughes, respectively),
and their programming has been historically targeted towards black people specifically.

Comedy Central was founded by white programming execs, and has been demographically targeted towards white male viewers since its inception.

Btw, Kevin Hart turned down a Comedy Central offer to produce Real Husbands of Hollywood for BET. So for some black people, actual black ownership/control matters over lip service militancy.
