I remember reading a post of yours about book publishing and you were against "writing for free" and "paying to publish your own book" if I remember right.
I had this idea of releasing an album and having a short biography, or motivational book that kind of ties in with the album. Maybe only release the book digitally as a premium version of the album.
What would be the right way to go about it?
I was thinking along the lines of what Malice did with his book "Wretched, Pitiful, Poor, Blind and Naked."
Well, personally, I'd release the book as part of a deluxe version of your album on iTunes, etc. Charge $10 for your album and $20 for the deluxe version with the book.

Now, I am against paying to publish your book or writing for free personally (in my profession it's looked down upon [professional research and academic writing]), but my Dad, who is pretty successful professional photographer, wrote a book for free and put it on Amazon. He made some good money that way (though he has name recognition), plus it helped with his photo tour business. Publishing art (music, photography, etc.) for free is different than publishing academic literature. I think getting your name out there for free is a good idea. The art world is much different than the academic world. Look into selling your book in e-book form on Amazon too.

Still, given the options (making a deluxe version of your album that includes the book, or putting it on Amazon in ebook form), I'd go with making a deluxe version of your album. I put out a big compilation (Max B: Library of a Legend) on iTunes. We (the team I worked with) tried to make a good insert, but didn't charge extra for it. I think if we had something substantial, we would have. We were trying to make money for Max (I, nor anybody on my team, made money from the LOAL collection on iTunes). I don't know how "big" you are in the music world, or if you're just starting out, but people would pay more for a deluxe version if you marketed it right. Since you're connecting it to your music, it makes more sense to put it on iTunes. If that doesn't work out, you can always make the ebook and put it out on Amazon. The ebook business is big. But be warned, people will pirate the shyt out of it, if it is good (my Dad ran into that problem). But, that's a good problem to have. If you're good enough to have people pirate your shyt, you are doing something right. Still, it sucks because you're losing money, but it's increasing your name recognition and fan base.

Going the professional route to publishing a book is very timely, and you won't see much money. I worked on a book, while working on my Ph.D., and it took over a year to edit, revise, and finalize everything. And I didn't make much money at all (academic books rarely do. You mostly publish academic books for credibility in the field. If the book gets picked up for course work, you'll make a good amount though [like a former boss of mine]).

All things considered, I'd go with the deluxe version of your album. If that fails, then put it out as an ebook on Amazon.

Great info man thanks!
I didn't know you were involved in the Max B project. Thats crazy dope!
I'm not "big" in the music industry by any measure, but Im definitely very familiar with the business and have been heavily involved with it for more than 10 years now. I've been part of labels with major distribution, and have done the indie thing too. In the end I prefer the indie route, and thats where Im at with it right now.
I like to create positive hip hop. (Similar to the subject matter you would expect from J.Cole or Kendrick). I draw everything from my life. Which is why I have this idea to tie the album together with a short book. The music will highlight certain situations but with the book I could go in depth.

Yeah, I was the project director on the Max B:LOAL collection (I was the leader, and had about 15 people under me).

Good luck with your music breh. :salute:
