It's not simple because the media will make it a bigger deal than it actually is. The majority of the locker room wont care. If you can play- you can play. Organizations simply don't want the backlash and the scrutiny of releasing a gay player.
I'm going to have to disagree fam. Mainly because that one gay player in a locker room will likely fukk up the whole dynamic of what happens in that locker room. All of a sudden certain jokes won't be made and dudes will be wondering if the gay player is looking at them a certain way, or if he's gonna come onto you and shyt like that.

I been around a lot of athletes...and in this day and age, they ain't really ready to have that honest conversation about accepting a gay athlete in a locker room with them. That is probably why we've never seen a half-decent player, much less a star, come out while active.

Every type of person, race, gender, sexual orientation gets made fun of in a locker room. This is why Jonathan Martin was a coward too. It's up to the gay athlete to be just one of the guys(which I think they would be). Jokes are jokes.

That's what this thread was about. He's not making history. His actions prove it.

REad the thread title.
I respect you dog, but you are a dude that is impossible to debate with because once you have something set in your mind you ain't changing your mind for nothing. So, you can have it. This thread is about Jason Collins not making history, and there is no undercurrent of homophobia at all from any of the posters in this thread.

The thing is the gay athlete won't be seen as one of the guys because he is gay.

Having a gay athlete in a locker room is going to fukk up the dynamic and it will take some adjustment. There will be backlash from others, even if that backlash is in the minority, and that will trickle down to affect the team, thus affecting team dynamics.

Like I said, if it were that simple, a notable player, even a John Salmons type nikka, would have come out already.

Says who? The crappy players arent accepted in the locker room because they suck. If the dude can play he can play. I'm telling you most wont care as long as they can be just one of the guys and not isolate themselves.

I agree that "most" won't care, but that 5% who does care is going to fukk things up in that locker room. And that small minority who is against it is likely to be outspoken about it too. We all know what one bad apple can do to a locker room. We've seen that narrative play out in sports time and time again, so to believe that one dissenter in the locker room won't affect team dynamics is naive, in my opinion.

How about not giving that 5% 50% of your attention?

How many times have I said this country is infected by people who give 5% of the idiots 50% of the attention.

That's on YOU if you choose to give something that small a big enough platform to make this a debate. What mythical world do you live in where everyone is 100% behind everything? That shyt don't count. @Trip is 100% right.

So everyone needs to change because a small portion cant be one of the guys? fukk that. I hate that nonsense...

If a gay player cant conform and be one of the guys he should be cut. This would happen with a straight player too.

WASHINGTON -- Jason Collins, the 12-year NBA veteran who announced that he was gay in a Sports Illustrated story last April, will be a guest of first lady Michelle Obama at Tuesday night's State of the Union address.
Collins will be among a handful of invited guests of the first lady for President Barack Obama's speech given to a joint session of Congress.

"It's a big deal that the administration has extended its hand to not only me, but my family, and also sports fans and also the gay community," he told ESPN's LZ Granderson in an interview Tuesday morning. "I cover a lot of different topics."
He also told Granderson that he is staying in shape in hopes of playing again in the NBA, but said that he can only speculate if he'll get a call.
