You broke it down EXACTLY how it is. You are definitely a Hip Hop head. When people speak about southern production, like it is something new, I can tell they aren't that deep into Hip Hop. What makes it unique today is that it is more clean due to technology, and more synthesizers are being used then before. Back then the instruments were computerized, but they simulated real instruments whereas now it is based on mostly electronic sounds. I think Trap music is what helped usher in the dance music become popular today because trap music relies heavily on synthesizers just like Electronic Dance Music. Also, the dopeboy image plays a big part now but the essence of it has been around for a while. Props for letting the truth be known.

A lot of west coast stuff maintained that old school feel which is why they got hated on a lot by NYC because by the time the west started popping, sampling was already big and gave that organic, soul feel that was missing in the early to mid '80's, and west coast music was seen as old and wack, but DR. DRE & Deathrow changed that shyt.

As far as drums, it seems like trap music kind of useses boom bap patterns, only difference is they add 808s and add extra drums and snares

add in the fact that its slowed down as well. Most trap beats are in the 70s tempo while the other rap was 80s and above.

Modern day trap as already stated was def made popular by TI. Jeezy, Toomp, Shawty Redd, Drumma Boy and Zaytoven.

Y'all nikkas listing these west coast shyt and other, yes there are elements in those artists in what ti and jeezy were doing but they didnt really birth it. N some of yall got it confused when nikkas say "trap music" its not referring to the lyrical content about the trap, its the style of production mixed in with a cadence, flow "swag"

the kids diss the 80's rap cuz of the vocal cadence NOT the production cuz lots of indie/club/dance songs are using the exact same presets and drum kits(Roland like you mentioned) but adding more 90s tech/house synth patches, that's where all them jeezy and 3-6 mafia sounds are coming from.

youngins dont f-ck with the 80s rap becuz of the flows and them kurtis blow whodini type accents, it just sounds hella old now.
off topic but if you listen to Kendrick Lamar his flows are like early 90s madcap style like LONS or early Common Sense- all from a 2012 perspective of course but anyways.....

trap is definitely the "go to" style of modern day mainstream hiphop/rap now though
