You're assuming 4-7 are missing. In that case it works the same way:

The answer is 96. It can also be 19 if it's a trick question.
well yeah thats the long way,

but people are taking the answer
3+6+12=21
and going to
8+11+21=40

doesn't work that way

the first 3 rows correlate with each other. Theres a simple equation

There are many answers but the one that makes the most sense is 19. Everything else isn't math.

I'm wondering what learning aptitude this was originally designed to gauge

I'm not saying this is an effective measure of it but critical thinking and problem solving skills would be the answer.

true, I might have used "learning aptitude" wrong.

i meant, is this a test designed with the purpose whereby the way an individual attempts to solve it reveals the pattern in which said individual's mind works/thinks, rather than looking to see where they place in an intellectual heirarchy/ IQ-wise...

and if it was what would be the name for said ways of thinking

just like europeans broke down temperaments into 4 categories choleric, sanguine, etc,

Or myers briggs has the INTJ, INFJ thing for personalities

i'm wondering if there's different terms for how you solve a problem that this math sequence was designed with the specific purpose of helping group people into
