nikka you aint neva lied bout dis shyt right here. :whoo:

And i had to push 10 times as hard doin work OUTSIDE of regular class work to get where I'm at skill wise. Da prollem wit a large portion of people who attend art schools is dat dey dont put in dat extra grindin time when their not in class. So many mufukkas i was goin to school wit would do da class assignments and dat's it. Don't do shyt during holiday/summer breaks. Nada. And then wonder why when recruiters from companies come to visit n look through portfolios, dey name is not on da lists of interviews. :rudy:

Mah ass LIVED in da fukkin school's library. I sometimes skipped class so i could go study because so much of da bullshyt dey have goin on in dem classrooms didn't apply to what i really wanted to do. A nikka would be posted up in da back of da library in a corner submerged in Anatomy books all day err day. I used to be in ALL of da figure drawing/painting sessions. Eam when i was just a freshman i would be attendin dem shyts posted up wit mah newsprint and charcoal ready to get at it.

It really is all about how much you're willing to sacrifice and push yourself. It's funny because da cats who came in freshman year dat were :ohhh: status...by da time senior graduation came along dey were :ld: status to me because i made sure to stay up dem extra hours and spent dem weekend nights camped out in da studios workin. Ended up elevatin pass damn near all dem cats come thesis time. :youngsabo:

All about sacrifice and how bad you want it. But dat really pertains to anything in dis life doe. :yeshrug:

:dwillhuh:

And dey're a couple individuals on dis site whom I've shown samples of mah work to so you can save any :duck: attempts. Because judging from all da nonsense you've posted in dis thread I'm sure dat was prolly gonna be your next response. :aicmon:

If you don't mind me asking...

Are you on salary or independent contractor?

How much are you banking?

I'm curious, never met someone in that biz

For some industries, basic comprehension skills is all you really need. Having the Degree is just something that companies want you to have just so they can say they have degree holding employees..You'd be surprise by the amount of non-degree holding people working on wall street in NYC when I was working up there.

I got my bachelors though :yeshrug:

Well it really depends homie. It depends on da studio, da project, and what point in da production you get hired. It also depends on whether or not you've actually joined an actual VFX studio(i.e., Blur, Massive Black, Mirada, ILM, Weta Digital, Tippett, Aaron Sims Co. etc.). Games and film are different in terms of job stability too. Most of da time if you're not part of an actual studio you'll get put on a contract when workin for a film project. It can be from 2-3 monfs all da way up to a year or 2. Like i said, it depends on what stage you get onto da production pipeline and how much work is needed. And your stint on da film projects generally isn't dat long. A good portion of da studios tend to outsource concept artists anyways. Most of da heavy weights in da industry dont eam belong to any studio and just do it via freelance.

With games it's alot easier to get long term positions since dey're always crankin out IP's. (ex: Bungie, Valve, Id Software, SCEA, etc.). Some studios are shyt when it comes to bein put onto salaries because dey will work yo ass to death. EA is a real good example of dat. :scusthov: . Plus it's alot easier to climb da ranks if you're at a game studio, especially if you're really good. Get a title or 2 underneath your belt and you can go from an associate concept artist to a Senior concept designer on a project in no time. Again, it all depends on your performance and skill. Which also adds to your value and how much you can negotiate in regards to your pay. So many studios will hire talented young cats str8 outta school and give a senior artists in dey own camp da boot because dey can save money by hiring da talented young cats instead. Get da same level of work but half da price. I've seen it happened all da time. Dat young cat is so hungry to prove him/herself dat dey will stay late, do overtime, do whatever to make a good impression. Dat's how i was when i got hired so i know exactly what time it is when dem kinda decisions.

Mah first gig out of school (06') was hourly(contract, benefits n alladat shyt) and i was startin out at around 50k dat year. But as you progress through your career and move onto different studios it increases. And dat's not including da shyt you make if you're also doin freelance gigs. I did/do book illustration, personal commissions, and other design work so dat was some pretty good extra income outside of mah 9-5 studio job. Some of da heavy weights like Carlos Huante, Ryan church, Neville Page, etc. are stackin dem fukkin CHIPS breh. :usure: . I'm talmbout bringin in low to middle six figures $$$$.

Again, it just depends on what you bring to da table. Some folks are REALLY good in doin one thing (ex: creature design) and some other REALLY good at doin it all (environments, props, characters, creatures, illustration, story boards, etc.). If you aint on some bawse level type shyt in one category then most likely da latter of da two examples i just gave will get da gig, da better pay, and will have a lot more longevity in their careers. It also opens you up to different types of projects which will look great on your resume. Showing you can adapt/adjust to any style dat's needed.

*edit* Also many of da top tier concept artists also teach and are apart of seminars n shyt as well. GNOMON School of Visual Effects, Red Engine, TAD etc. Dere are lots of other branches to get guap from in regards to dis industry breh.
