No one punishment works for every kid. Find what works and go with that. I ate spankings for lunch, what i DIDNT want was for them to take away the SNES. Taking away the SNES is what would get me back in line. My sister though, she responded to spankings.

Hitting is not discipline, it's punishment. Physical punishment is sometimes necessary for extreme behaviors that require severe correction but if kids have discipline instilled in them don't need physical punishment on a regular basis and if that's your go-to form of discipline or punishment then you're a shytty parent.

a small whipping for a minor offense has always been our tradition, way before we met a white person.
you can still get set on fire in certain parts of Africa & the Caribbean for major offenses - and thats also an ancient tradition.
Discipline maintains order & structure within a society.
Not everyone needs forceful discipline, but sometimes its necessary.

Spankings should come with instructions and explanation for the punishment
On top of that you only need to spank kids while they are young. By 8-9yr old they should be behaved enough to not really need spankings
Personally I think spanking are most effective for getting immediate results. a 7 yr old won't sit down after multiple warnings? whup they ass and explain why the ass whupping is coming
I been around people who don't spank at all and seeing someone explain and bargain with a 4 yr old why they can't have ice cream for dinner is cringe worthy. Parents trying to negotiate with their kids in the grocery store to stop a tantrum. goofy shyt like that. Those are situations where i'm whupping ass. i'm not begging a kid or bargaining with candy in situations where i need them to stop asap

I do believe there's a strand of truth to this. I think the fear of spanking teaches children how to perform acceptable behavior, not necessarily do it altruistically. So in a way children become more skilled liars and learn the art of sneaking to do their dirt. I guess if we're going for appearances and making the family look good, spanking gets the job done, but I know too many crafty people who were spanked to say it actually taught them morals or discipline. But they're really good at acting the part because they understand consequences. I also believe though different children respond to different types of discipline differently and good parenting means really assessing what's gonna work for the particular child you're dealing with.
