Seems irresponsible of Dr Strange to cast that spell. I'm not well versed on his comic book portrayal but in terms of the MCU this seems so out of character. I know it's required for the plot but it feels like bad writing at this point.
I mean, wouldn't he at least explain the consequences to Peter BEFORE casting the spell?

A few reasons, but not one of them is what you are probably thinking, the most glaring one is that Chadwick is resting in power (though he did some voice acting in the “what if” series, I think he is in 4 of them altogether). Sony and Disney share Spidey, and it makes Sony a lot of money, where is Disney can tap into all their resources, Sony only has Spider universe to make bank with. Plus, BP 2 is in production right now. Cooler was already behind in writing it, before the pandemic and Chadwicks passing
