^^^Like some of Spikes other flicks.. It's gotta bunch of ideas/topics/themes thrown around throughout the movie (black culture/pop culture/gentrification/the economy,etc.) that are addressed at various points throughout the movie.
The second aspect of it is that it's an update of the various people and characters from the neighborhood who've been in Spike's earlier films like we see Mookie (played by Spike) still serving Pizza's for Sal and Nola Darling from She's Gotta Have it pops up as a Jehova's Witness. While also introducing some new faces like that blood cat..
The OTHER aspect of it is that it's basically a satire/parody of overtly religious church culture. The followers, the preachers, and even the entertainment business (movies and books that preach that god/religion will solve all of black peoples problems).
