State of Play made me realize something concerning about Sony.

What gave them the freedom to go all in on live service was a lack of a credible threat to their business model. As gamers people noticed the drop in first party releases but even now if you look at sales this had a minimal impact on that.

I still say companies are at their best when they can steal ideas and concepts from each other and improve upon them and are at their worst when they are monopolies that dictate how the market goes.

AMD quits on the high end graphics card market and it's no coincidence that the 5080 is the first 80 series card in a long time that is weaker than the previous generation's 90 series card. Undoubtable stuff like this will happen in consoles as there really isn't any competition anymore. When they vanquish their foes and no longer have to focus on acquiring customers enshytification happens.
There is no drop in first party releases. This is a weird narrative that just simply isn't true.

If you count the third party exclusives it's even better. Idk why people are saying this. People just being dramatic.

If the show was concerning than the Xbox show is panicking.

Two first party games, 2 second party games and a third party game that already was shown at your competitors showcase last year.

Everything runs through a console wars filter for yall.

There’s is no “lazy sony”

They aren’t making decisions based on what xbox is doing.

Sony is reaching for a GAAS cause that’s where the money is.

Their single player games are getting less and less profitable.

Xbox is shit like Call of Duty, Candy Crush, and Minecraft now. They have several evergreen products that print money. They don't really care if you're their customer on their platform or someone else's.

There are like 5 PS5 only games on that list. The rest are remakes or cross generation games. Meanwhile all that PS4 list are new PS4 games outside of 1. Nobody is being dramatic when they point out Sony is "remastering" damn near any PS4 game that can for PS5 to shore up their lineup. And this isn't Nintendo nobody bought the Wii U so we're getting these games to a real audience ports they're games already playable on the PS5.

Sony is doing the exact thing they have been doing since the PS3 era, just with less head leadership talent.

Sprinkle 1 or 2 1st party exclusives each year, a remaster (it was collections back then more so) publish some Indies and then towards the final 2 years drop the games that essentially took half the generation to make but will be remembered well into the next generation.

The whole Xbox ain't got no exclusive games 1st party games, started to take off during the PS3 era.

Before that people just essentially bought both boxes at some point, but also boxes went from 299 to 99. You could get a PS2 OG Xbox for dirt cheap later on in it's life span, almost every single console out now is the same exact price it was at launch, 5 years in.

I think MS has made the best choice in really separating itself from competing with PS, now they can make moves in innovation with having to play by " hardcore gamer standards"

If PlayStation wants to keep going the route they are, I'll cop their system and whatever 1st party title that catches my eye here and there. Everything else I'm doing on Xbox and switch.

Besides demon souls nothing on list after the PS5 came out he posted was remastered. He didn't even add the other remasters to pad the list.

I'm not counting later PC ports. Spiderman 2, Returnal, Helldivers 2, Ratchet and Clank and Astro Bot. If you skipped the PS5 generation until today and just had a PS4 you got access to damn near all those other games.

This is a dumb take lol. They don't have to go hard on showcases since they've been criticized in the past for blowing their load years ahead just to have the game take 4~5 years later to release from announcement.
Microsoft was the "loser" in terms of gaming and yet they increased the price of Gamepass? It doesn't work like that.
Nah they just don't have many developers and games take longer to make. Thus is why closed ecosystems are dumb now. You essentially paying for 1 game per generation, that's flat out not worth it. Generation almost over and naughty dog hasn't released one title.

I paid for
Horizon Forbidden West
Ragnarok
Ratchet and Clank
Spider-Man 2
Astro Bot
Demon Souls
Helldivers 2
Returnal
Rebirth

Generation almost over? Bro it's Feb 2025, we still got over 3 years left. How is this related to a closed ecosystem? The "some of those are cross generation" argument is pointless because y'all can't be in here talking about framerates and resolution and then talk about "but it's on PS4" as an argument. Nobody in here would've preferred to play Cyberpunk on PS4 for example as that's a cross gen game.

This is silly because up till today there's already 75 million PS5s sold. This hypothetical gamer that skipped a PS5 up until Feb 2025 and now built a gaming PC to play em all is not the average consumer. Astro Bot isn't on PC. Same with GT7 and Demon Souls. Nobody seriously sat and played some of these cross gen games on PS4 either. Especially not on here.

Not in the age of digital foundry comparison wars where this place looked like a Linus Tech Tips forum comparing framerates on these two consoles. We can't simultaneously talk about PSSR, DLSS, framerates and all the other new tech we enjoy today while then bringing up that some of the best games are on PS4.

Dog this is not enough stuff :dead: if you told yourself this during the ps3 generation I guarantee you'd smack the current fatboi. I'm currently looking at 5090s, you trying to play on a ps5 in 2028? That's crazy

Your argument is there was no drop in titles. My argument is there was a first party shift to GAAS titles and the stuff in the pipeline before that got released a hand full of PS5 exclusive titles got released but their output was impacted even though I did say it didn't really have a notable impact on sales. You posted a list that amounts to basically a single PS5 exclusive title a year average and a bunch of cross platform games and said there was no drop.

The reason I'd say their sales weren't impacted is because they really don't have a legitimate competitors in the upper end console space rather than their flawless execution. They've probably cancelled more PS5 exclusive titles than they've released.
