State of Play made me realize something concerning about Sony.

Not good from the jump, per se. It was a good idea, but it became brutal to play because they were basically working an Early Access title as release.

You'd effectively lose progress doing the main quests unless you saw them through. Each one of those Tall Tales is hours of time and you had NO checkpoint system. If you left 90% of the way there, you had to do it all over again. You got very little for completing stuff. And that completing stuff was in of itself lacking, so you'd run around and continue to redo the small quests over and over, making it painfully monotonous.

IDK how long reviewers played it for, but if you're passing by you can say "gee this is fun" but any serious time dedication the game back then would show the shallow depth. I played in the "limbo" era, which was just Xbox+Windows Store users and additional over-time content, and even then it wasn't all there yet.

I like the game and more people SHOULD play it, but to act as if it was always good is doing a disservice to Rare for picking their pants up and putting meat on the skeleton. It got better way before it reached PS. It's been in a better state for some time, but it took longer to get to that state to begin with. :yeshrug:
You're not really saying anything because it was in EARLY RELEASE so its not supposed to be a finished product. And its sort of a live service type of deal so additional content was a given. Any issues regarding game/content was short lived and the game has kept a steady base for all these years so it was doing something right.

It was never really Early Access, it was just ran like that. You know with the skeletal base and so on masked as "games as a service". Eventually Rare worked it out enough to warrant a PS5 release.

But the game was mega ass for progression for the longest time. :bryan: I give them credit for the turn around (like MCC) but it was never that the game was always stellar. They spent like 5 years getting it right.

Yeah that sounds more accurate. The theme though, is Sony is getting greedy as fukk.
Its' not greed, it's the cost of things. Inflation isn't just for food and commodities. There's a reason we haven't had a decent drop in the price of the current console generation in 4 years now. Costs of the components in the past would drop pretty decently over time. That isn't the case anymore for ANYTHING.

500 dollars in Nov 2020 when the XSX/PS5 dropped is 610 dollars today. 20 plus percentage cost increase due to inflation/post covid. It is what it is fam.

we may finally see the cost of the standard PS5 be 399 this year MAYBE. That's insane.

it’s not “greed” it’s just not worth it to tank profits for console sales anymore.

Sony/microsoft won’t be taking a loss on console sales going forward.

Expect costs to be in the same range as similarly powered PC hardware.

Average cat ain't buying or have the bread for a gaming PC. We know this. :unimpressed:

and waiting on Sony's single player games is kinda weird.

When I get my 5080/5090 rig this holiday season (since my oldest will be off to college :mjcry: )
:banderas:

Hired Da Gawd @Ciggavelli as my advisor to make sure I don't cop some bullshyt either. We going Ultrawide gangsta style :banderas:

edit: :dame: on that last line.
Like I always say, a 6800xt or similar + a CPU + RAM + motherboard is the same price as a PS5 Pro. If they had money for that then they have money for a PC that can run MOST games 4k/60, especially with DLSS/FSR

Its funny to me that people levy this criticism at sony at this gen of all gens. Feels like this is the generation where mathe they don’t have as much pressure as before but they have still been taking pretty big swings.

no matter what people say spending 100’s of millions developing multiplayer/live service stuff which was their weakest area last gen has been a huge risk that has had very mixed to bad results so far. taking another shot at VR was a risk that didn’t pay off either.

sony also gave a lot of smaller teams and partners huge budgets to make bigger games for them. Housemarque a studio that only made download only arcade games for them past two generations, hit critically with returnal.

they gave arrowhead the budget to go from a top down co op twinstick shooter To a full fledged AAA game. Team Asobi who were mostly just doing tech demo’s…a full AAA platformer. Etc. etc.

i think people just need to realize that games are gonna take longer to make now and the only solution for it wuld be for sony to buy more studios which no one really wants either
