2020 has been the best year for hip hop in a while:wow::wow::wow:
I truly think this might be a top 5 year of the past 20. Maybe higher.

I definitely think this is a stronger year than almost any year of the of 2010's. There's a couple years in the past decade that has individual albums that have really withstood the test of time and become huge, huge classics. But in terms of overall quality dropping on a monthly (and often even weekly basis) I've never experienced anything like 2020.

I think not being able to tour and so much inside time, plus the climate of the world right now, has given artists more time than ever to create music, and more things to write about than usual. Just listened to a podcast with Alchemist where he also said he and other producers with DJ commitments have had a lot more time to make beats this year and focus on making albums with artists, since they've had large chunks of their schedules opened up that would usually be busy.

Statiks the homey. This is my favorite album of his entire discography and it’s his most concise
What'd you think of What Goes Around and 8? I liked those a lot too.

Gran Turismo that he produced for Currensy is probably my favorite batch of his production, but as far as his Soul Survivor/1st Infantry type "producer albums" I do think this is his best one.

I've never given Statik enough due. I know that the producer albums went out of fashion, but I think it's cool that he'd never stopped doing them, and even though he's never experimented way too much with his sound, I do think he's gotten better at it. He's also crazy passionate about the culture and everyone I know that knows him says that he's a stand-up guy.

Both albums you mentioned are great. A lot of his previous albums gave me the same vibe as old DJ Clue/Tony Touch compilation albums. And that is to say that I love them overall, but find myself going more specifically to certain tracks than running it through everything.

I just feel like this is an overall tighter, more refined package of what he did on all of his albums from Spell My Name Right up to 8. It's the best version of all his albums.

And as far as giving him his due, better to realize it now but it's not surprising that he gets looked over, only in the sense that he's never tried to come out of his lane and lobby for commercial appeal. He is rise and grind through and through and still works with a blue collar mentality. You literally get to see it when he does his now famous live album sessions. He just did the last one with Term right as COVID was tearing through NYC :manny:

This album is really dope in that it serves as a full circle moment for him being on Nas' Mass Appeal...

Because this mixtape was what put Statik on the map back when I had just gotten into college.

The Prophecy Mixtape by Nas Hosted by Statik Selektah

He had been in NYC for awhile making crazy connections with Preme et al. I remember seeing him on blog sites and thinking that shyt was crazy because he was someone that grew up in our small fukking seacoast NH town. He graduated the same year as one of my sisters and immediately packed his bags for New York

And then his first album's first single was pure hip hop with Q-Tip, Styles and Term

But ya, I'm happy to see where Statik is at this point. He's put in ALL of the work and he's finally getting his due and getting paid accordingly now :obama:
