Nintendo never embraced their OG 80s demographic growing up. Optical was the future and the prices they were charging more than 30 years ago for some SNES games were more than the price of games TODAY. Simple Greed.

Some other interesting tidbits.

"Sony and Phillips jointly created the CD-ROM format, everybody else like Sanyo, Matsushyta, Goldstar and so on all had to go through Sony and/or Phillips for licensing and what not.

Nintendo burned bridges with Sony by announcing at CES they were ditching them for Phillips, then Nintendo burned another bridge to Phillips for backing out of their contract with them.

Therefore Nintendo couldn’t get a CD drive even if they wanted to."

One part of the story that doesn't get told as much is that after being rejected by Nintendo, Sony actually went to Sega and pitched the idea of making a console together. Sega of Japan rejected them as well, and thus the PlayStation project got the green light at Sony. Sega of America CEO called that the "stupidest decision (that Sega made) in the history of business".




Nintendo rejected Sony, then Sega rejected Sony. The rest is history.
