Difference is, Jordan always said those were his favorite two players growing up in North Carolina and how he wanted to be like them. Since the only games they would show back then on tv in the 70s in North Carolina were unc and nc state games, all he knew and idolized were walter davis and david Thompson. Thompson introduced Jordan for his hall of fame induction. Jordan tried to get the bulls to sign davis when he was a free agent.That's the difference. Jordan never denied who he idolized and patterned his game after. I was 7 years old in the early 90s and the only reason i knew who a davis Thompson and walter davis were at that age, was because of MJ acknowledging them as his favorite players growing up, in a book I read about him. I knew of walter davis through Jordan. Never knew how he looked until the internet came around. Jordan never hid from these dudes.
Kobe, on the other hand, got on national tv and said Magic Johnson was his favorite player growing up, that he wanted to be magic, patterned his game after magic's and that he didn't find out who Jordan was until the 1992 Olympics when he was a fukking 14 year old and son of a former nba player. He didn't know of a 6 time scoring champ, back to back nba champion, face of the league with endorsements galore in 1992, but he knew of magic johnson, the man who faced Jordan in the '91 finals.
