that's a lie, rihanna was second class on def jam, they first pinned her to the whole wayne wonder/lumidee/caribbean wave while parading tierra marie as the #1 r&b act, then they made her beyonce light on her second album, execs/industry folks weren't listening to her nor interested in putting tons behind her until she took control of her image and sound on GGGB (she had to snatch that Umbrella track and is lucky britney turned it down). one thing you have to credit rih for is she fought for her spot, she could've been forgettable but she kept working to overcome her limitations and limited expectations
