thats an emotional argument though.
What he said doesnt make him racist.
A cat walking around in the middle of the night hooded up is a question mark to most people.
Do yall live in the hood? because ive walked around at all times of nights and black folks look back and watch people too....its not just white people.
Just last week I was walking out a store on the south side of Chicago...I was behind a chick and startled her when she looked back and saw me...she was black...is that racism?
look at it like this:
Poverty is the number one indicator of crime.
In cities Blacks represent a good amount of poor people (poor whites tend to live in rural areas)...so in cities black people tend to be responsible for a good amount of the crimes.
White people make the jump and associate black people that look a certain way w/ those crimes because there are a good amount in these highly populated areas that are doing the robbing.
Ignorant? Yes...but its reality.
In Chicago something like 400 people were murdered last year...About 330 were black people...and like 8 white people were murdered!
A lot of white people (not all) look at that and see young black people as a threat based on the numbers alone.
Now of course we all know the reasons why things are the way they are...but knowing human nature, do you really expect most people to dig deep and think about this...especially if it doesnt concern their people?
Its just not how people are...people stay at the surface...much like the constant CAC, or anti gay talk here.
What Cuban said opens up that conversation...but painting him as a racist off top shuts things down once again.
It's a disservice to all parties involved with these discussions as well because it's an attempt to invalidate anyone's views without actually having to reason with them or attempt to see where they're coming from. It reminds me of people who have nothing against Jews, but don't like what's happening to Palestinians in Israel. When they express themselves, rather than have a rational discussion with them on that subject, some people find it easier just to label them an anti-semite. Problem solved, now they don't have to have an uncomfortable conversation or have their views questioned. Same with someone who doesn't agree with gay marriage.......must be a homophobe, and again problem solved, discussion ends, and both parties walk away with their own views left unchallenged and further entrenched.
The same happens unfortunately to anyone Black who doesn't immediately label SAS a c00n, or post the Superman smiley. I haven't read every post within this thread or the other threads on this subject, because I was late on the story, and I just don't have the time to sift through all of these posts. There are posts however, from both sides that I thought were insightful, but it's disappointing and not beneficial when ones are labeled c00ns or accused of caping for racists, simply for having a different point of view. Simply having a different POV doesn't make them Jesse Lee Peterson.
By that same line of reasoning, it's a disservice to shut down people like Cuban. To the contrary, I think we want people like him to express themselves so we can see where they're coming from. It creates discussion, and the possibility of reasoning with the other side. I think it's more dangerous for these ones to keep their views to themselves and never be challenged. For them to fear being labeled a racist does nothing to further our standing in this country, or challenge their views. If anything, it causes people like Cuban, who could be a potential ally, self-censor themselves which would be the equivalent of White Flight in the realm of race discussions. If we can't have discussions with all of the parties involved, then what's the point in getting all emotional? Might as well just talk to the wall, and nothing will be solved.
