I help coach my sons AAU team 15 &14u. Kids of all races. At least 80 percent of the kids are from single parent homes. Their ability to follow simple instructions and comprehend is reflected in their style of play. I can easily tell which kids have incarcerated fathers, no father, or a stable structure at home. Through my observations, the kids who have the ability to listen to understand have the latter while those who do not have respect for male authority have the former.

Most of the single mothers who show up to the game are the stereotypical single moms. Show up to one local game, never offer any help towards building the team which in turn would help provide the structure and support their sons desperately need. The kids who have structure at home, never late for practice or a game, always on time and move with a certain level of confidence and assurance than the kids that don’t.

Compare to the single mothers, the single fathers who have kids in the team are very involved. They are first to help with traveling to the games, first to help with fundraiser efforts. This is mostly because the men understand the importance of structure, family, respect and relationships these teams provide amongst other things.

However I wonder, about the kids with the single moms, do they feel like they can't support their kids bc they don't follow sports, feel like "it's a guy thing" or feel like that's something "his daddy should do" so bc he isn't in the picture I can't relate.

I wonder if they had daughters but their daughters were in a beauty pageant or hair pageant, they would pay more attention.

I got a cousin who making bank in IT. Was running around wild in his teens/early 20s got 3 kids with 3 different women. he married happily and has a kid with his wife but the other two tearing him alive with child support.

You hit it on the head. I used to have that same train of thought. What I do notice now is that good mothers, regardless of how they feel about something, know how good it felt as a kid to have that support. They acknowledge that something bigger than them exists. How many can say that though as single mothers . In my experiences, most single moms put themselves above their kids. Those are the traits of a bad mom fam.
