It was evident that this would happen sooner rather than later, but the abrupt timing of it just makes me wonder if there is some kind of health issue.

You can tell by the last few weekly press conferences that he was just mentally done here. Even though the last two years have been what they have, I can never forget how he made this program relevant for a time but now it's on to the next regime since the HBC has proven that you can in fact win here.

I just wonder what the short list of candidates looks like right now...

no chance spurrier jr gets the interim job so he definitely wont get the helm long term. it was time for hbc to go, but it not ending well doesnt change the fact he put the program in a much better position than it ever was where just getting to a bowl wasnt enough.

hes a legend, hopefully like you guys mentioned he'll get a tv gig somewhere. i cant see him doing games, i could see him as a studio guy, it'd be a shame if we dont get to see a character like him on tv anymore.

Steve Spurrier is reportedly retiring. Probably the second greatest coach in SEC history behind Bear Bryant. He completely revolutionized the game.

He was also king of the one liner. Here are some of the best:

1. On a fire at Auburn that destroyed 20 books: “The real tragedy was that 15 hadn't been colored yet."

2. Playing at Tennessee: “Will be the 14th time I've coached in Neyland Stadium. I've coached there more than some of their head coaches.”

3. On Tennessee: “You can't spell Citrus without U-T.”

4. On Tennessee QB Peyton Manning: “I know why Peyton came back for his senior year. He wanted to be a three-time star of the Citrus Bowl.”

5. On playing Georgia early in the season. “I sort of always liked playing them that second game because you could always count on them having two or three key players suspended.”

6. On whether Florida would beat Georgia: "Is Ray Goff still coaching there?”

7. When coaching Washington on hoping for consistent success against the Dallas Cowboys: “Hopefully [they can be] our Georgia.”

8. On Clemson: ""They’ve got a good team, but continue to not play very well when they play us for some reason."

9. On recruiting in Alabama: “In 12 years at Florida, I don't think we ever signed a kid from the state of Alabama. Of course, we found out later that the scholarships they were giving out at Alabama were worth a whole lot more than ours.”

10. On Florida State: “You know what FSU stands for, don't you? Free Shoes University.”

11. On Jadeveon Clowney getting a speeding ticket: “I didn't know Jadeveon's car that could go that fast. He doesn't have a pretty car like those FSU guys used to drive."

12. On Vanderbilt becoming a tough game: “They're not slow guys anymore.”

13. On Bobby Petrino: “Good football coach and had about as much fun as I did in the NFL.”

14. On coaching so long: “I forgot to get fired and I’m not going to cheat.”

:russ:

Classic shyt. Funny ass dude.

It's a great day to be a GAMECOCKS!!!

:deadmanny:

well said. you think his son will be hired as HC permanently? hope not. his playcalling always seemed suspect. Gamecocks need someone fresh. A real upstart.

I honestly think he stepped down to give the current coaches a chance to shine after realizing he was done after the season. I'm guessing the Chickens are looking for their Dabo to step up like Clemson did after firing Tommy Bowden.

Dabo would have tried to hang 50 on him.

@Woodwerkz

Yep...that was and still is the plan. You got a team full of Tigers on the coaching staff that played in that game themselves and wanted to make Spurrier after getting beat by us.

You could tell how he was walking around on the sideline. Looked like he was laboring just to get from midfield to the 40. Hate that sonofabytch but respected the hell outta him

Shoulda left when Conner Shaw left.

His last SEC win was against Florida at the Swamp which led to Muschamp getting fired :wow:
