true, I'm just speaking on the totality of the sport. No music genre & sport has ever been as intertwined as hip hop and basketball. I remember stuff like this

or using hip hop songs on shyt like NBA Inside Stuff jam sessions.....now they're too good for the genre

Damn this took me back ... This was during a time when basketball players and wrestlers were at a level of popularity I haven't really seen in sports since

Anyway I say they could've did way worse than Sting :yeshrug:

Now rap has a severe lack of accessible music compared to the 90s but y'all won't talk about that. The league would have Flo Rida on speed dial before they ever check for Future's availability or whoever else. Why? Because you're not the audience they're trying to attract. You're gonna watch anyway. It's been like this forever, only in the 90s, it was Coolio. It was Kris Kross. It was Naughty By Nature mixed in with some blatant pop and rock acts.
this isnt true at all.

Rap has A LOT more accessible music out now than in the 90s.

A lot of popular rap songs in the 90s didn't need to be bleeped out every other bar or at least it was very minimal. Remember when all-star weekend had those Team Up (I think that's what it was called) rallies where it was on every other channel that Saturday talking about what the NBA does for the community? They would always have lots of performers. I can't recall many of them needing censors or whatever. By accessible I mean shyt to the point where it was safe to play anywhere. Using an earlier example, Coolio was the king of this (It's All The Way Liiiiiiiiiive)

You are remembering a song like Hip Hop hooray, but Im remember a lot of the Death Row songs, Biggie songs, Outkast, etc that were also big ass hits that had to be bleeped.

This era has a lore more safer acts now than back then.

you are naming a couple of artists

J. Cole, Drake, Nicki, Big Sean, Wale could all do stuff.

I dont care either way about Sting but the genre is about as safe as it gets now. Those dudes in the 90s were scary.

Wish the NBA would just give up trying to target that older, affluent audience they're desperately wanting to attract already.

Just go after your bread and butter, man. Today's hip hop = pop & big spending audience anyway.

Not a bad move imo.. The hood is always all in come all star weekend. Sliver tryin' to flip the script and get the casual suburban whites into at least being curious about the game. Its a page out of the Superbowl. They have the money. Get a big time act for halftime, promote the performance, and try to get ratings and clicks all across the spectrum :ehh:

The acts you're naming weren't the type of acts the NBA was inviting to all-star weekend. The NBA has always preferred those Rock n Jock Jams type of songs

The acts of today that you're naming either have done stuff or will at some point do something for all-star weekend

Well the NBA has preferred inoffensive pop acts over Rock and Roll acts.

But thats not what Im questioning. You said the rap music was safer back then than now.
