Bret may be a icon in Canada but you can't say his legacy is far beyond Sting. Bret was the guy who got screwed over and Sting was the biggest WCW franchise player in history. Fans always stuck with him when it mattered...that wasn't the case with Bret by the time Austin blew up.

Sting was anointed from Day 1 based on his look in a southern territory and he stuck around forever...when he became stale, he had a career revival based on a dark, cool concept/gimmick and embodied the brand itself... fair enough, not knocking or dissing but that's what it is...

say what? fans didn't stick with Bret once Austin blew up?? Did i just imagine all those "we want bret" or "you screwed bret" chants reigned down in stadiums for nearly a decade+ after he left WWF ...don't forget what a big deal the screwjob was ....and what a big deal his return was....

just look at bret and stings come-up...sting was anointed just like reigns today...bret was snatched from calgary territory to be the bland member personality-wise of a team that wore hot pink, who at the time weren't as exciting as the rockers, demolition, twin towers, road warriors, british bulldogs, etc in this same dude proves himself and has a hell of a run as IC champ...then makes himself a main eventer and the face of the company...it's not even comparable...

Bret.

Sting did suffer from not having as talented a bunch of IN ring workers to work with that Bret did.

Funny thing, i think if you switched them in the 90's and had Bret in WCW in Sting's place and Sting in Bret's place, their gimmicks would have probably fit even better in those respective companies

Bret is up there with Savage and Rock as my personal favorites. Didn't watch enough Sting to be objective but it always seemed interesting to me that Sting was most over when he wasn't talking or wrestling.

Yeah, like Hogan and Warrior in WWF and like Luger in WCW at the same time. Difference was, Sting was a million times better than those guys in the ring. In fact he absolutely shyts on the rest of the "former bodybuilder turned wrestler" field. His workrate in the late 80's was some futuristic shyt compared to WWF and most of NWA at the time. Try watching some of those old Crockett shows. Sting came in the company with like 5 minutes experience in the biz and was INSTANTLY one of the best workers on the card. Putting on 60 minute classics with Flair within a year.

Guys like Warrior and Luger never got better than WOAT status as workers, even when they were 15+ year vets. Hogan reached the heights of "good at performing his schtick, I guess". Sting was among the best workers in America almost from the moment he stepped foot in the industry. He'e like the Kurt Angle of former bodybuilders.

And the reason Sting was "anointed" was because he was insanely over and universally beloved. It wasn't some forced shyt like Reigns.

Ric Flair has always got the credit for getting Sting over in the late 80's.

Working with Flair elevated and legitimized Sting, no question. But he was extremely popular before that. He was over as fukk at Starrcade 87 even though it was his first PPV appearance and he was in a 6-man tag curtain jerker. This was before he ever interacted with Flair.

I prefer Bret. I think he was a better worker, was easier to have a better match with. I think his promo work as a heel puts him over Sting's promo work when you compare the two. I always preferred the left leg step through sharpshooter over the right leg step through scorpion deathlock:pachaha: Both were great baby faces. A shame Bret's career ended prematurely though
You just told a level of smarkyness in my soul it was okay to come out after this line. Enjoy my first rep of this new rep era :wow:

You're not remembering correctly. Bret had a careful long trek push from the get go. It was old school when titles mattered....got the big heel tag title push..turned face in 89 after the Bad News Brown thing...got the ic title after getting over...got the top title the next year...Hogan came back and he had to deal with his influence. He was right back on top by Mania X. He was preordained too...Sting was a bigger face than Bret was from the get go. He was ahead of him. He was top champion 2 years before and I never heard of a sharp shooter until Bret went singles...I always thought it was just the Scorpion deathlok done with the left leg.

No. He didnt. He was the top heel champion who lost to a undeniable super top popular face. Sting is who the Horsemen booed again...I know u have seen that legendary Ole Anderson promo before they turned on Sting. Don't play yourself. Sting was legit before Mark Calloway ever had the Undertaker gimmick.

I miss this in today's product. To watch Bret go from tag to ic to world champion was something for the viewer to invest themselves in. Watching Rock and Austin battle over the IC title and later the world title:lawd: You don't get that anymore
