Even worse is they were contracted through a temp agency which means they had no rights as workers, they probably are not affiliated with any major union that could represent them.

Like I don't understand Americans. We were taught about Mussolini and Hitler and Stalin in high school. We've had cautionary tales of when things go wrong when civilizations reach a period of peak hypercapitalism and a failure of liberalism....they turn fascist. Why did anybody think we would be exempt from the rule?
