It was never a billion dollar IP like Batman or Spider-Man...
This is irrelevant. No superhero movie grossed a billion (not adjusted for inflation) until The Dark Knight in 2008.

Anyway, the goal is not for Superman (2025) to gross a billion. It's for it to be well received by audiences and make a decent box office gross (around $700-850 million).

I hear you.... I hope it's good and it does well, I just don't think it's a "slam dunk" like some were saying. I watch most of these anyway. I'll be there for 'Superman' I think it looks great from the trailers. You can see the 'All-Star Superman' influence on screen, it's like it's ripped directly from the comics

Also... those practical robots are fire
I'm a childhoold GL John Stewart stan waiting 25 years for a big screen live action adaptation, so for me it's of the utmost importance for this Superman film to not crash and burn. It's the linchpin.

It's not crazy at all

The more cynical society gets the less it cares about Superman

Superman and (to a lesser extent) the F4. Both are perceived as being a bit vanilla, which is why ppl will call the former boring and say the only thing interesting about the latter is Doom. Lazy takes? Sure, since there's more than enough engaging stories in the lore. But society as a whole don't read comics, they just perceive what's presented to them.

Superman isn't doing a billion it's just not realistic. If it can do 700ms I'd consider that a success but it's critically that matters more.
700 mil seems okay but man of steel did 650 mil...

I don't know sort of seems like an entry superman movie in 2025 needs to do more than 50 mil better than the entry superman movie from 12 years ago.

I always thought it was risky for Gunn to do a superman movie right out the gate. This shyt has to be a smash hit critically and at the box office cause if not I feel like every other DC movie is going to be DOA.

Depends on the budget for Superman (2025).

Anyway, no, Superman doesn't have to be a smash hit. As long as it doesn't completely flop, things should be fine. The rest of the DCU isn't going to be canceled if Superman is only a moderate success.

Starting out the DCU with Superman is a risk, but he is the only realistic option. Wonder Woman still has the funk of WW84 on her. The Batman just came out a few years ago, and there have been a billion Batman movies. The Flash brand is in the mud after the movie. Green Lantern is still in the mud because of the 2011 movie. Aquaman's brand is in the mud. No other DC heroes are noteworthy enough to a general audience.

It makes sense to start out with Supes, not only to revitalize the Superman brand on the big screen but also because Superman built DC's brand to begin with. It's only fitting.

Except superhero films in general have been down. Horror films have been doing damage at the box office the ladt few years. I genuinely feel Superman will do well there's an excitement I've seen from people that hasn't been there in a minute. A genuine hope for just a feel good superhero movie. Not anti hero violence or dark themes.

Why the tonal shift all of a sudden guys? And why the expectation for this to hit a billy. This is the first movie in a new universe after a less than stellar universe in the Snyderverse. In Gunn I forever trust and from what I can see he has done his thing. If you see the movie and it’s phenomenal spread the positive word of mouth.

I read the "breakeven" point for this movie at the box office is around ~$500-550M. I saw it on 'The Wrap'
Makes sense, in Hollywood the usual rule of thumb for breaking even is 2.5x it's budget. This got a budget of 225M, goin by wikipedia, so that's around 560M breakeven, if that number is right.
