regardless of how it supposedly works, the job of the label is to keep artists in the red. That goes for 30 years ago, 10 years ago, and now. Even though it's costing less and less to record and promote albums, the labels are going to make their money back regardless. They got to make sure that you don't "recoup" to the point as an artist must sell back the little rights and publishing you have involved in these 360 deals. Wasn't she having problems with her label years ago?
I agree they’ll make a lot of money on the road but that’s also separate from the album budget in most cases. Let’s say the album had a $10 million dollar budget between marketing, producers, features, studio time, samples etc. Assuming she goes double plat or more, has multiple plat singles etc she’s gonna recoup that easily. They aren't worried about publishing going back to her anytime soon so I'm not sure what your point is on that. She's fine, her tour will be successful (if she completes it)...she's winning right now. Label is happy, she should be happy but you never know due to her personality.

IIRC her label issues were with TDE and mainly about not releasing when she wanted, or making her release when she didn’t want to; she didn't want to release CTRL, they pushed it out.

if so, it's deserved. There's something on this album for "everybody".
why is this a good thing? what happened to curating your art/sound? very easy to release two albums, instead of one, that cater to different sounds yet create cohesion vs subjecting people of differing tastes to half an album of bullshyt/lack of cohesion they don't want to hear

Semi different topic but I wonder if this is going to wake up TDE....or if they simply move from Kendrick being the breadwinner to SZA being the breadwinner. I feel like it started getting obvious they were just living on Kendrick (and SZA), not releasing music, not doing shyt...and eventually Kdot said fukk that and left. With SZA doing over 300k and about to go on a big tour, there really shouldn't be an excuse for Q/Jack Rock/Zay/etc not to drop this year. Not to mention SiR.

I always think about how they had a Christmas toy giveaway that kind of became a big thing, even having Rihanna show up in 2017. They had the roster to create their own festival and didn't do it. Meanwhile Odd Future did, and then Dreamville did. That could have been a lot of money going directly into the pocket of their artists, especially the guys who aren't as popular as Kdot/SZA.
