Considering that every single country with less poverty than America spends MORE, not less, fighting poverty, I'd say let's keep going on it. Good education systems, good health systems, and a strong social safety net have been necessary to eliminate poverty in every country where it's come anywhere close to happening.

You don't like "social engineering", too bad. Every single criminal law and every single stipulation in the tax code is a form of social engineering.
