You gotta know yourself and what you can eliminate and how much you should have after bills and what's not.
One tip I can give you is get a change jar. Whenever you get change, throw it in that. I got a cup on my dressing table that I throw all my day's change in, I sift the quarters out and put THEM into it's own separate jar and cash 'em in every year's end. Everybody else going to give you solid tips, so I'll just let you have that incase you ain't been up on that.

Oh! I don't know how I forgot this one because it helped me big time - As I got raises, increases, etc. I kept my bills the same and didn't accrue any new expenses. Increase $ coming in, Decrease $ going out. It was hard because I wanted to upgrade big ticket items a few times.

When you get your tax return don't act like it's free money that someone gave you and spend it all up. Think of it as a paycheck that you worked hard for.

No eating out (no matter how cheap)

Take a set amount of money out EACH week after bills and either lock it away where its not easily accessible or give it to someone you trust for saving

Clip coupons (they really do add up)

I could go on for days. I'm BOSS at being cheap.

I get so mad about all the money I miss out on because when I remember I have a coupon the date is often expired.

Now if you're talking about lack of self control in regards to spending then you need to just set your mind to do better

Figure out your expenses and pay that shyt off top, take your bullshyt money that you use on whatever out in cash, put the rest in savings and leave your card at home so you don't have access to it. Delete your card info from online vendors that you make unnecessary purchases from so your card can't be used unless you're at home and make the effort to do so

i never understood this :dead:

like, assuming you have a steady stream of income and X amount left over after rent and bills...you cant just save your fukkin money? :dead:

stop going to restaurants, order takeout and rip a 20 in half for the same effect

ive found that the key to saving is not spending money on weekdays :ehh:. also, dont spend money that doesnt leave you with a tangible product (clothes you need, some electronic, etc)

Don’t know how much you have to work with but for my situation I usually take out $20 each morning before I head to work, spend less than half that day for lunch and then when I get home, I put the rest (which is usually between $10-$15) into a plastic bag in a shoe box. Last year I did this for a whole year and was able to save $2400 (just putting away 1’s, 5’s and 10’s all year)..Cashed it out on January 1st and was in the bank, white people looking at me like im a dope dealer, bags full of 1’s and 5’s….threw it all into my savings..

Just started again this month and already have over $300 saved

and plan to have over $3k this year's end..

just put away anything you can each day, instead of using your debit card, take out the cash for the day and store the change at the end of the day. Bottom line, this takes discipline and I don't care if you make $7 an hour, you can always put up SOMETHING...fix your mind on saving and after awhile it becomes second nature..

:laff:

We need a CPOTY (Cac poster of the year) or Honorary breh banner for this dude

*edit on the real though this is the behavioral part of saving. If you cant control yourself put it in a different account and make it hard for you to access that money. Once you're use to it then think about having it attached to your main account so that you can get to it easier in case of emergency

some sound, simple financial advice in here, but in terms of everyday life?

- Cook more: I saw an immediate impact when I was spending $100 on groceries for a month as opposed to $40+ on ONE MEAL. Seriously, its a big deal.

- Cuttin out cable and finding out how much internet you actually need: I'm considered a "power user" by most standards, but paying for internet bandwidth that you aren't going to use is silly. No point in having a 50mbps connection for one person who's at home a total of 9 hours a day. Also, get rid of cable altogether there are almost no packages worth it under $100 a month. While netflix + Sling TV keeps you under $60 a month if im not mistaken.

- Cut back on vices: Squares and Liquor in particular are expensive as fukk. I remember my sister calculated how much my dad spent in Newports a year and that caused him to scale back significantly. Same with drinking, because I know some of you prolly aren't drinking garbage, that adds up FAST. I had to chill on the craft beers myself...fukking $10 a 6-pack is a lot of cheddar once you add it all up.

- Stay out of the fukking club/bar: This kinda goes hand in hand with the previous one...but the mark up on EVERYTHING in clubs is sometimes upwards of 200%. Bars less so but its still way too much for the most part. Get onto your social apps, check your alternative publications in your city for outings. I know for here in Detroit, there is a fukk ton of FREE events that usually go on, especially in the summer months. And many of them have free food/drinks. Stop feeling bad about free shyt.

- Shop looks, not names: Outside of shoes, suits and certain other pieces, there is really no reason to be spending copious amounts of money on clothes. Jordan's and shyt are some of the WORST investments a person can make.

More long term....

- Start a IRA asap: If you have a job with no 401k set up then you need to be putting away money for retirement on your own.

Stop drinking out, stop smoking, stop eating out. Only drink when its free at events or at home.

YUP.

I NEVER order alcohol at restaurants. it's a total waste of money. I either drink before hand or drink at home. and I ONLY buy liquor at costco which is the cheapest liquor store out here. also, I ALWAYS buy liquor in the 1.75L sizes cuz it's much cheaper to buy a big bottle.

After paying bills this is what I do:

I have an 401K I pay into with my job matching

I direct deposit $250 to my credit union every check

I typically save another $300 to my other savings every check

I work a side job a few hours a week and make a good $100 every week which also goes to my credit union.

My credit union account doesn't have an ATM card, and I cannot transfer funds from that account via internet. I have to physically go there, which makes it prohibitive to make withdrawals from there. thus I don't.
