Brothers… Level up where you can (degrees, certs, etc.) and just do the best that you can.

Beyond that…

Start Building! A.I. is so sophisticated and user friendly today. Spend time building something! Determine pain points in your field and build a solution to address it. Or, work on a passion project that you can share, sale, or use it to elevate your position. It feels like the early bitcoin days in terms of impact.

I’m not saying that success is guaranteed in this space, but it is a force-multiplier in many ways.

Anyone work in local government IT? Looking at this sec engineering job with my state(low 6 figures). I know private is where the money is but I'm looking for some stability. I don't think I'd get layoff due to the amount of hats I wear(startup) and relationship with the owner, but the current market got a nikka a little nervous
I work with a lot of local county/city govt IT folks. Super laid back jobs if the environment is stable. A lot of job stability in lieu of not being able to match private sector pay.

Pros are like you said - the job stability. Depending on what phase of life you're jn, can be a big plus. Majority of them cats are 20+ years in the game just trying to ride out til retirement.

Cons are it's typically not the best place if you trying to level up or like to work on latest and greatest tech and obviously the money is lower

Typically don't want to replace or introduce anything new unless they absolutely have to. When it's time to replace whatever system they want to replace it with the exact same shyt so they don't have to learn anything new

Generalized a bit but there are some county's that do like to be on cutting edge. Usually bigger ones

A bit of game too.

It can actually be easier to grab a gig in "big tech" if your skills are there. The issue? The bar is incredibly high at many of these companies.

At a smaller company, or at a company with a smaller tech department, there is usually one person who is screening and saying "yea, I like that guy" or "no, I don't like that guy." Not only that, they are usually only hiring for a single role, so they are often looking for a specific "fit."

Large tech companies have multiple steps and multiple interviewers. If you know your stuff, it is much more difficult for someone to justify passing on a candidate. The screens are technical in nature, again, if you know your stuff, it is tough for an interviewer to write around moving you forward. There are also multiple teams and roles, so even if you're not a "strong fit" for a team or manager, another team can pick you up if you have strong technical skills.

A panel has to decide, so even if someone "doesn't like you" for whatever reason, 5 other people can say, "he is really strong technically, was able to answer this and that, was honest about his shortcomings, and blah blah."

im fukking exhausted

3rd round lunch interview... i lost money and took time off for that bullshyt, brehs. tired of grinnin at these cacs for the opportunity to be underpaid and forced into showing face at some hick ass office with a bunch of neanderthals.

i had one of these idiot employers ask five interviews of me last month for a fukking desktop support job like they're paying six figures for a management tier FAANG role or something lmao. maybe im just in my feelings right now, but it feels like a particularly nasty time to be a brother in IT.

i know that everyone is feeling the strain rn, but as per usual, we get hit first and we get hit the hardest.

You should be interviewing for the FAANG role, if you're going through the process anyway. What is stopping you?

Not in IT but work for a local government. Do research into the local governments budget and what kind of deficit they have. If they're shaky layoffs do happen. Also depending on the city new hires are first to get the axe regardless of who is more skilled.

Going to continue providing quick updates on my boy because he is actively interviewing (I am not). Again, all of this is to counter the doom/gloom, "no one is hiring, no one is looking" stuff I'm seeing posted here.

Quick Updates:
- NVIDIA reached out to him and wants to move forward.
- (2) Interviews with a top FAANG (one management role, one for high-level IC)
- Top AI firm (OpenAI, xAI, Microsoft MAI, Google AI, etc.) moving forward after coding screen

I think he has something else out there, maybe with a top gaming company. I'm only really interested in tracking FAANG or adjacent.

Get after it!

No need to post a resume but at least give a high level on his actual skills/experience to give folks an idea

I mean if breah aint giving nikkas in here Referrals and or Connects to reach out to all this shyt is useless. The people who get into FAANG dont really need coaching, its a networking game at this point due to the sheer volume of apps + AI Slop throwing off application counts.

Look back a page, offered a referral for an IC6 security engineering position at Meta that my boy is hiring for.

Job Opportunity
If anyone is in the Security Engineering or Cybersecurity space, a good friend is hiring for a Sr. Security Engineer (IC6) role at Meta. If you're serious in the space and have talent/skill, send me a message and I'll reach out and potentially refer you. Security Engineering is not my remit but I know enough to sort through lames.

Don't BS me.

And you're wrong. If you're strong, someone will hit you up. Or, you reach out to a number of recruiters or hiring managers on LinkedIn Premium. Include some recent milestones and your current resume.

As I discussed, a number of these opportunities are from people reaching out to my boy.

Stop talking about shyt if you don't work FAANG or high-level tech in AI or finance, stop giving bad advice based on your zero experience. You don't know.

Man, are you in for a culture shock if you never worked in the public sector. I just couldn't do it regardless of job security or benefits.

I mean everybody getting the same exact pay raises? People who don't pull their weight won't be fired? I have to accept less money in exchange for job security? Get me the fukk out of here.
:mjlol:
Didn't even make it past the probationary period. I'll take my chances on the open market.

I'll ask him then DM you if he's cool with sharing details.
No need for that. it's not for me. I said 'to give folks an idea'. There's obviously a lot of folks reading the thread trying to figure out what the situation is with the tech job market .

Just saying "it's easy yall. my boy rolled outta bed with Nvidia flying him out while he put Meta on hold. you can do it too" dont help anybody without any context to go along with it. because it's not as simple as just going to the website, filling out an application and clicking submit.

giving some background info would be way more helpful. e.g. how many years of experience? what skills? what roles did he have before? data science? ai/ml?

no names or locations are needed for any of that

No formal education. I've discussed his recent background. Worked Intel/Defense (similar to my background), then transitioned to FAANG.

He possesses an understanding of the functioning of many different domains, the ability to translate insight and algorithms into highly efficient programs, and the engineering skills to construct high-performance computing platforms and networks required to execute those programs.

Mainly focus on the last two sentences. Strong with DSA and building shyt at hyper-scale.

I've gone into detail in previous posts of what to study and how to interview.

I'll also say, a lot of his ability has to do with truly diving into what is needed to build systems at scale. I think a lot of it is mindset (which I'm always preaching in this thread).

So if you're a security engineer, look at what Google wants in a security engineer and begin learning those things. Software engineer, network engineer, whatever, same process.

Quick Update:
- He just got moved forward at large gaming company.

Dude is having more trouble with scheduling and fitting interviews in around his motorcycle build than he is getting interviews.
