Because unions provide a multitude of benefits: medical, dental, vision, 401k, pension, and most union members make ~10-12% more than their non-unionized counterparts. At my (unionized) job, we make $4-6 more an hour than other local, non-unionized jobs doing the same thing.

If you're going to come into a unionized workplace, it's sort of rational that you pay union dues because otherwise you're getting a massive handout without paying to fund the system that got you those benefits, making it unsustainable. If a public worker doesn't want to partake in a union, then they shouldn't be able to draw on the massive benefits provided by unions.

Edit: Just going to post this here because I continually see people complaining in this thread that "my union doesn't benefit me at all" and, to be honest, a lot of it is a load of horseshyt. I recently saw a table that compared the earnings and benefits of local employers compared: the best comparable job to my unionized job was $4 an hour less; the best comparable health plan was puny and pathetic and I don't believe it included visual or dental. There was no program to help pay for and encourage associates to go to college. No other place offered a 401k or pension. If most of these complaining unionized people compared their earnings to non-unionized employees, it'd be an eye-opening experience. No one else got paid OT for working over 8 hours. And that doesn't even get into benefits like paid vacation time.

It's easy to say that unions don't benefit you, but then you realize that you're making a bit over $20 an hour instead of around $15 for the same job, after taking much longer to reach maxed pay.
