Correct. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five AND the treacherous three opened for The Clash in the early 80s. At the same time, one of the best punk bands was all black (Bad Brains), and the beastie boys wanted to be like them in the beginning. So, a punk band deciding to be rappers was probably not weird at all in that scene.

Anyway, the beasties are legends. I don't think any of them are really great as MCs ... but they are undeniably classic group, and not just in hip hop. While there are a lot of better hip-hop groups, few or none transcend genres like the beasties.

The fact that they never updated their delivery always irked me. Like c'mon

Always respected them because they were humanitarians and seemed like genuinely good dudes. Put on the Free Tibet festivals, spoke out against racial injustices, very involved in various creative ventures without being whores etc. Even tho the music was mostly corny

Beasties are some of the realest dudes out. They've spoken out against many injustices and have always stood for equality, they refuse to lend their music to commercials or licenses. Yeah, they never updated their flows or anything, but beyond the music they always kept it real.
