First Hops Club of 2026 is in the books.
Order of the beers (the guys that run it always go in order of ABV over styles):
1. Lil Strawb is collaboration beer from Toppling Goliath out of Iowa and Drekker Brewing out of North Dakota
- Fruited Sour is the style (4.2% ABV)
- I don't love sours, but this didn't really come off as sour. Bulk of the flavor profile is Strawberry, but it has some lemon and other citrus notes to it. Everyone basically felt this tasted like a "Strawberry Soda" that you would get from a grocery store. Wouldn't pick it up for this type of year, but I don't think it would be out of place to enjoy in the Spring/Summer.
2. Premiums Pils by Sierra Nevada
- Pilsner is the style (4.7% ABV)
- First thing that caught me is that for some reason these are slim like 8 oz cans for whatever reason. The favor profile on this was citrusy and actually pretty hoppy. It really felt like they were trying to make an IPA but couldn't get it right so just said fukk it, it's a Citrus blend Pilsner. Not bad, still like the first beer not something I was looking for in a winter beer tasting.
3. Dunkel Breakin my Heart by Kros Strain Brewery
- Munich Dunkel is the style (5% ABV)
- I don't love Dunkels, but this wasn't bad. I've had mostly good luck with beers from this brewery. This one poured a nice dark color. It had a strong malty/roasted flavor. There were supposed to be chocolate notes on the finish but I didn't pick that up.
4. Pay Heed Pale Ale by Boulevard Brewing
- Pale Ale is the style (5% ABV)
- Automatically loses points for featuring that fake ass bird on the can. This again felt out of season for when to best enjoy it. This was pretty hoppy for a pale ale. It poured light, but not as crisp on the finish as I would like for a Pale Ale.
5. Equal Magnitudes by Pipeworks Brewing
- Hazy IPA is the style (7% ABV)
- I'm sure I've had beers from this brewery, but couldn't place them. This was our first and I think only pure IPA on the deck. And again not what I was really looking for on this night. This definitely was in the juicy family so would flow with the voodoo ranger beers. It was more fruity than citrusy on the flavor profile. But, it went down smooth and was one of the better beers we had tonight.
6. Bad Mother Shucker (2025) by Abita Brewing
- Stout was the style (8% ABV)
- I've seen this beer a few times so far this winter and haven't wanted to try it. Primarily because it's got Oysters in it's brew. You can't taste the Oysters at all, and they say it was briney, but I've tasted briney things and this didn't do that. I didn't get any of the other flavors it said it would have like chocolate or caramel. It really just tasted like a flat stout. I think was right to have avoided this one.
7. Fade to Black by Left Hand Brewing
- Stout was the style (8.5% ABV)
- I usually enjoy beers from this brewery. So I was excited for this one. It was a nice dark pour so everything I expected out of a stout. But, again this one just really came off flat to me. The coffee notes in this one made it taste kind of burnt on the finish. They note licorice in the flavor profile and I'm wondering if that is one of the things that washed out the other flavors.
8. Bigfoot 2026 by Sierra Nevada
- Barleywine is the style (9.6% ABV)
- I look forward to the Bigfoot releases every year, so was excited to see this one as the final beer on the evening. It had a nice amber color and while nothing really jumped out to me in it's flavor profile. It was a nice smooth drink. It didn't really remind me of any specific barleywine, so I can't say oh it's like this one. If you like the style, you will most likely enjoy this one. I'd likely pick this up, but it wouldn't be something I'd go out of my way for.
Overall kind of a weak start to the year. Next month is the Hops Club's 30th anniversary so the OG founder is wanting to do something big. He owns two of the larger liquor stores in the City and is a partial owner of the restaurant that hosts the club. So I'm anticipating we will have a pretty good mix next month.
