New Years Beer - for the first new beer of the New Year. I went with the Celebrator by Ayinger Brewery. Style is Bock-Doppelbock and the ABV is 6.7%. This is nice roasted and malty a bit sweet on the finish. I expected it to pour a more Amber color. But, it's dark almost like a stout. Goes down easy. If you see them out your way you should definitely pick it up.

You know me. It's a Saturday and on Saturday's I break out the Tall Cans. So that's what we about to do. Today's tall can is local to me it's the BL:TN aka Better Late Than Never from Walnut River. The Style is a Hazy IPA and ABV is 7.4% so it can catch you. I'm veering off my stout run. This is a juicy IPA so if you're a fan of the Voo Doo Ranger IPA's you'll like this one. This one hits the notes of drinking some OJ or a Mimosa. The citrus notes are strong the crush factor that mimosas have is also there. I think Walnut River is probably the best Brewery in Kansas. So this is once again them fukkin stuntin on the state with a great beer. If you see em, get em.

It was beer day yesterday. So I swung by one of the spots on my way home. Nothing really jumped out at me. So I grabbed the Sam Adams sampler pack cause it had at least 2 beers I've never had before. The first beer out of that box that I tried. Was the Alpine Spring. The style is a kellerbier/zwickelbier. Which apparently they are in the lager family. They are lighter than you typical lager in taste, but are missing that crispness that many Kolsch's have. ABV is 5.5%. I reckon this would taste better off the tap, but kind of flat in the can.

Beer #2 out of my Sam Adams pack from the other day. Is the Blackberry Witbier. This is a Fruited Wheat Beer and the ABV is 5.5%. This one I didn't like. I don't mind wheat beers. But, this tastes flat and the blackberry is just not really coming through in the flavor profile maybe a smidge at the end. If you think of your most common wheat beers like Blue Moon or leinenkugel's sunset wheat. This is in that family but just doesn't hit. It pours about the same color as a blue moon, and if I had an orange wedge to add to it, it might have got an extra point out of me. Again like the previous one I tried out of this box, I would likely get a better feel for it off the tap.

Didn't do a Tall Can Saturday. So we will have a little Tall Can Toozdee NXT edition. Beer on deck is the Kolsch by Boho Brewing. Got the last 4 pack in the shop. This is a nice crisp beer, it's got some citrus notes in it, but not enough to make it sour or IPA like. Pour comes out lookin like a wheat beer. I'm a big fan of Kolsch beers and this is more of the style I like them as. Unfortunately this micro brewery went out of business so I won't get a chance to try this one when it's in it's proper season.

Started the holiday weekend early. Been hitting some local spots. Best beer of the day so far is the Shabu Shabu. From Central Standard Brewing abv is 7%.

They call it an Ube Coffee Stout which according to untappd is in the blonde family. But it pours smooth and dark. But it's got hints of maple vanilla and cocoa. No real coffee notes on the finish. It's sweet but not sweet enough that you can't drink more than one. I normally don't share beers you can only be in my actual city to try. But this one caught me by surprise.

It's cold as fukk so glad here. So I'm doin nada a damn thing but chillin. But, if it's Saturday and I'm chillin need that Tall Can on deck. Today's Tall Can is from Phase Three Brewing the beer is the Pressed with Cookie Butter Imperial Porter with Coffee. The ABV on this is 12%. I would definitely put this in the dessert beer group. It poured a nice smooth dark. It's sweet but not over powering. But, yeah sweet enough that I only want to drink one. The specific notes they call out are Coffee, Cinnamon and Sugar Cookie. Not coffee bitter on the finish so that is a plus and I don't really pick up the cinnamon. Which for me I like that cause I'm not a guy that loves cinnamon. It really does have like a sugar cookie taste on that finish and I could see an argument that says the finish is a Cinnamon dusted sugar cookie. Easily one of the better beers I've had in 2026.

First Hops Club of 2026 is in the books.

Order of the beers (the guys that run it always go in order of ABV over styles):

1. Lil Strawb is collaboration beer from Toppling Goliath out of Iowa and Drekker Brewing out of North Dakota
  • Fruited Sour is the style (4.2% ABV)
  • I don't love sours, but this didn't really come off as sour. Bulk of the flavor profile is Strawberry, but it has some lemon and other citrus notes to it. Everyone basically felt this tasted like a "Strawberry Soda" that you would get from a grocery store. Wouldn't pick it up for this type of year, but I don't think it would be out of place to enjoy in the Spring/Summer.
2. Premiums Pils by Sierra Nevada
  • Pilsner is the style (4.7% ABV)
  • First thing that caught me is that for some reason these are slim like 8 oz cans for whatever reason. The favor profile on this was citrusy and actually pretty hoppy. It really felt like they were trying to make an IPA but couldn't get it right so just said fukk it, it's a Citrus blend Pilsner. Not bad, still like the first beer not something I was looking for in a winter beer tasting.
3. Dunkel Breakin my Heart by Kros Strain Brewery
  • Munich Dunkel is the style (5% ABV)
  • I don't love Dunkels, but this wasn't bad. I've had mostly good luck with beers from this brewery. This one poured a nice dark color. It had a strong malty/roasted flavor. There were supposed to be chocolate notes on the finish but I didn't pick that up.
4. Pay Heed Pale Ale by Boulevard Brewing
  • Pale Ale is the style (5% ABV)
  • Automatically loses points for featuring that fake ass bird on the can. This again felt out of season for when to best enjoy it. This was pretty hoppy for a pale ale. It poured light, but not as crisp on the finish as I would like for a Pale Ale.
5. Equal Magnitudes by Pipeworks Brewing
  • Hazy IPA is the style (7% ABV)
  • I'm sure I've had beers from this brewery, but couldn't place them. This was our first and I think only pure IPA on the deck. And again not what I was really looking for on this night. This definitely was in the juicy family so would flow with the voodoo ranger beers. It was more fruity than citrusy on the flavor profile. But, it went down smooth and was one of the better beers we had tonight.
6. Bad Mother Shucker (2025) by Abita Brewing
  • Stout was the style (8% ABV)
  • I've seen this beer a few times so far this winter and haven't wanted to try it. Primarily because it's got Oysters in it's brew. You can't taste the Oysters at all, and they say it was briney, but I've tasted briney things and this didn't do that. I didn't get any of the other flavors it said it would have like chocolate or caramel. It really just tasted like a flat stout. I think was right to have avoided this one.
7. Fade to Black by Left Hand Brewing
  • Stout was the style (8.5% ABV)
  • I usually enjoy beers from this brewery. So I was excited for this one. It was a nice dark pour so everything I expected out of a stout. But, again this one just really came off flat to me. The coffee notes in this one made it taste kind of burnt on the finish. They note licorice in the flavor profile and I'm wondering if that is one of the things that washed out the other flavors.
8. Bigfoot 2026 by Sierra Nevada
  • Barleywine is the style (9.6% ABV)
  • I look forward to the Bigfoot releases every year, so was excited to see this one as the final beer on the evening. It had a nice amber color and while nothing really jumped out to me in it's flavor profile. It was a nice smooth drink. It didn't really remind me of any specific barleywine, so I can't say oh it's like this one. If you like the style, you will most likely enjoy this one. I'd likely pick this up, but it wouldn't be something I'd go out of my way for.

Overall kind of a weak start to the year. Next month is the Hops Club's 30th anniversary so the OG founder is wanting to do something big. He owns two of the larger liquor stores in the City and is a partial owner of the restaurant that hosts the club. So I'm anticipating we will have a pretty good mix next month.

Since I'm expected to be snowed in, made sure to stock up on beers as well. Been on a bit of a Mexican Lager kick. With Pacifico's being my go to Mexican beer of choice. But, since I hadn't had them before. I picked up a six pack of the Modelo Noche Especial. Guess this one was more on the Amber Red side for a Cerveza but I think in terms of Modelo's I would stick with the standard Especial. I would also probably pick up the Modela Negra over this one. Wasn't bad by any means.
