Vegas, an expansion franchise with only 7 seasons of existence has accomplished more in 7 years than the leafs in 57 seasons .


Since the 2017-18 season, their inaugural season, their first ever season in the nhl the Vegas golden knights made 2 Stanley cup final appearances ( 1 Finals loss in 2018 in their first ever season, 1 Stanley cup championship last year in 2023) and 4 conference finals appearances (2018, 2020, 2021, 2023)

They assembled the Best defense in the league
They Built their roster smartly, they also managed their salary cap smartly as well
They both hired a Good management team and good coaching staff.

To add insult to injury, the Seattle kraken last year, a 3-year old expansion franchise, went farther in the playoffs than the leafs in the 21st century. They lost to the Dallas stars in game 7 of the second round last year, the farthest the leafs advanced in the playoffs in this century was game 5 of the second round last year, a quick 5-game series loss to Florida. That Ether lol.

Breh there are 60-something grandparents and late middle aged people who never saw the leafs play in a Stanley cup finals. The only People who really Remember the memories and details of the last leafs cup Championship in 1967 are 70 years old and older.

Four generations of fans (Generation x, millenials, gen Z, generation alpha, )never ever saw the leafs win three playoff rounds and advance to the finals, let alone win the cup. Boomers and earlier generations grew up with leafs excellence, the younger generations grew up with leafs decadence and incompetence lol. Before the 1967-68 expansion the Stanley cup champion only had to win two rounds. The leafs haven’t made the finals and won the cup since 1967.

They made the Conference finals in 1978 but they got swept by the Montreal canadiens dynasty that year.



Pat burns led the Gilmour/Clark/Potvin leafs to the western conference finals in 1993 and 1994.

Then later Pat Quinn did the same and led the Sundin/Cujo/Kaberle/tucker/McCabe/Thomas/ roberts/berezin/mogilny/yuskevich group to two Eastern conference finals in 1999 and 2002.


They lost in 1993 to the Los Angeles kings in 7( we all know that one)
In 1994 They lost to the Vancouver Canucks in 5 games
They lost to the 1999 Buffalo sabres in 5
They lost to the 2002 Carolina Hurricanes in 6

5 conference finals between 1978 and 2002. Then Toronto hasn’t advanced to the conference finals since 2002, 22 years ago. Not even close.

Wow this 1st round has been and Bettman and co still have the nerve not to change it back to 1-8. This format only works if each of the division are solidly strong. But the bottom of the East especially is bad. Hopefully the 2nd Round is better.
