As for Non-Hip Hop media rating a Hip Hop album, I see nothing wrong with it. If they rate all genres of music, why not drop a review on a Hip Hop album? Music is music, they don't have to be in tune with the culture to review an album. Now if they are dropping commentary on Hip Hop as a culture, that's a different story.

Eh.

MCHG is a quality, 4/5 album. Sure, it doesn't have the depth, insight or candidness of Reasonable Doubt or Blueprint, but there's something to be said for execution. His stunting raps are still dope, the conceptual songs are still pretty solid as far as how they deliver the concepts (even if they aren't "deep"), the flows are on point, he's still got some really rewindable lines with double/triple-entendres, and the production is dope. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see him be even more thoughtful too, but let's not act like it's a weak album just because it isn't philosophical and shyt. It's not envelope-pushing, but it's still quality rap music at the end of the day. This, especially compared to albums like BP3 and Kingdom Come, is a project where he brings everything together really well :win: . There's a reason everyone is saying it's his best since Black Album; lots of people were hating on BP3, both then and now, so the whole "ohhhhhhhhh Jay stans love everything :troll:" argument doesn't apply.

As much as I want Jay to be more thoughtful/insightful, I really just need to accept the fact that he isn't Nas, Kendrick Lamar, old Talib, etc. That's just not who he is. He's still a well-rounded artist either way. On his songs like that, I'll just enjoy the cleverness and the concept execution - because both of those are always going to be on point - and be on my way. :manny:

I think Yeezus was an interesting project, but that critics went so crazy about it because it gave them an opportunity to indulge in their own egos as writers the same way as Kanye does with his music. That's not to say that the album doesn't deserve any of its acclaim, because I do think it's a quality record for the most part. But I think the minimalist approach from someone like Kanye makes critics/music nerds dig deeper for things on their own, that people give Kanye the benefit of the doubt since he's already seen as uber-creative, and that people are so happy to see him experiment that they want to praise it.

NY all day..Da Stead & BK..
I didn't listen to the album yet, but I'm hoping its good. Jay finally has the opportunity to do what he wants and not worry about sales. If anytime, it's now when he can take chances and truly make the music he wants, and not worry about pleasing people. Lets see what happens.

Ur setting urself up for failure if this is what u expect from this album..I'm tellin u right now..

Exactly.

And with this, I'm not trying to compare the two.. but I feel like critics LOVED Yeezus because they got a chance to flex their "i enjoy music with deep meaning and a message" muscle as if lyrical content purely is what determines music being good.

Props to you and @obarth because thats exactly what it is.

this is true. but you missed one key point. This time around. this album was rushed. and you can tell it was rushed. great beats, lyrics are decent enough for this era of wack rap. but he could've easily had better jigga like SONGS with a better story line in each song. but you cant do that in a couple of weeks of recording if you didnt walk in with this great idea of what you were going to do on this album.

i think samsung hit him up, or his people hit up samsung about an idea like this. to get paid upfront for a mil copies. and that was all the pre thought that went on for this album. he did it. made history, and threw some songs together. i think if he knows this opportunity is coming around again next year, that next album will be more in line with what jay stans want to hear. vs him giving you a light weight rushed product.

Dont nobody worry bout what cacs think of rap. These fools dont get it in the first place, so why worry. They said Yeezus was a classic album. I seen cac reviewers say that Krit's last tape wasn't dope. They need to stick to reviewing rock and roll and pop.

Don't nobody worry about what cacs think of rap, but you're the first to use albums sales (mostly bought by white people) in an argument as to why Jay is still relevant...

The #1 reason why I don't take critical reviews seriously is because they rarely tell the listener what they wanna know. Should I buy/listen to this album or not? Reviews rarely answer that question. They give an album some stars, a number rating, or a letter grade then proceed to give a review that doesn't even support the rating they gave it. Rarely does a review do it's job anymore. For example, a review will call an album an enjoyable listen, but it won't get any more than 3 stars, a B grade, or a 3/5. Then there's the review of an album that's given a masterpiece rating of a 5/5, but the review is only a paragraph long.

3/5 or a B is considered a positive score.

A hip-hop discussion board having a problem with critics discussing music. The irony :laff:

Ya'll would be :blessed: if the responses were reversed.
