The devaluation of the position has come at all levels of football and its the way teams are built. Not saying the position wasn't punishing before, as it always has been. The difference was, game plans were designed to punish the defense rather than outsmart them. The linemen were built to get leverage. Now, run blocking and running games are a way to keep defenses honest. It used to be receivers on that end of things. Things will change again if the sport is still around.

One of these perennial bottom feeding teams should just go completely against the grain and build a run heavy offense. Since no one cares about RBs they'd have little competition and could get whoever they wanted for a cheap price. You're also forcing defenses that are used to pass-heavy teams to defend the complete opposite.

Nothing about having a great running back makes you think "we have a chance at a championship now" ...

this is a stupid point, you need oline for passing offense as well, just as badly if not arguably more.

:comeon:
Of course you need it as well. That is a dumb ass comment breh. Its about who needs it more. In the event of the defense successfully shooting the B or C gap to rush the QB theres inherently more options for the X, Y or TE than the back most times. This is using the assumption that the line is needed more for receivers. Obviously no tight end or wr needs anyone to be successful other than the quarterback (so we really are talking QBs) and im saying that you can look at the teams that had horrible pass protection from the line and they still threw significantly more being hurried, or blitz. Take the Bears the past couple years, with that atrocious ass line. Theres a reason that their best skill player before Marshall came was Matt Forte who as their RB, was the leading receiver on the team and it wasnt because of his hands. It was because when the line couldnt hold, it took less to than it would to force a designed rush. Do they both need protection, yes. But today's game with receivers being dual threats, tight ends being oversized and athletic, the no huddle as well has made it less than it would be to make a successful back field. Plus you can get quality backs 4,5,6 rounds deep. They think why pay millions when you can get a decent back on a rookie contract? Where as premiere receivers are only getting drafted in the early rounds.

this oh so false.

especially the running part.

:upsetfavre:

Most teams that have won the super bowl in the past 2 decades with the exception of the niners vs ravens last year has had their defense show up in the playoffs if not the actual game itself. The two most prolific passing offenses in history got shut down in the super bowl. You need defense.

You're an underrated poster, and you're right. Teams are probably undervaluing runningbacks right now which means there's inefficiencies in the runningback market. As things stand, an saavy team could overdraft runningbacks and face better odds are landing a franchise back like Peterson, Lynch or Gore.

no it isnt if you agree you need it as well. you cited needing a good oline to have successful run game, as a reason for RBs being phased out.
when it has nothing to do with the oline

Its about who needs it more. In the event of the defense successfully shooting the B or C gap to rush the QB theres inherently more options for the X, Y or TE than the back most times.
a good RB doesnt need the line as much as a good passing offense. especially if you have a statue as a qb. seattle line is shyt but their run game is great because marshawn breaks a gazillion tackles
also Im not sure why youre lumping these together, a good run blocking line is nothing like a good pass blocking line.

the reason why forte was their best player wasnt because the line couldnt hold. it was because he was literally their best player on offense. jay cutler is an overrated ass qb and their best receiving option was greg fukking olsen. and forte is great at checkdowns

The Eagles LeSean McCoy averages $9 million a year, but with a $10.25 million cash number in 2015 and the new presence of Sproles it likely signals that that, long term, McCoyโ€™s usefulness is in doubt
