The individual scores within that range have lots more to do with industry hype/hate fandom than they do with the specific quality of the games.

Human beings opinions are influenced by much more than objective quality.
It’s asinine to assume some humans opinions are immune to outside pressures just because some of them are aggregated on a website.
It's asinine to assume any game rated above a 79 is all due to hype and not the game itself.

I didn’t say all games above 79 are due to hype.
I said the specific differences in scores for games above 79 are usually more about industry hype than any quantifiably objective measure.
Like the difference between two games scored 82 VS 88 is probably more about fandom of the game/genre/developer/hardware than an objective measure of quality.
