Plus you gotta factor in college football is just as big as the NBA. Johnny Manziel was in commercials with Lebron before he's even done anything in the league. Another reason Silver wants to raise age limit, he wants stars coming into the league, who will sell tickets and create hype.

If the NBA surpassed the NFL it won't happen for another 30-40 years when American's demographics change.

The league was good for those who love basketball. In terms of globalizing the league to the extent Nike and the NBA has been able to pull off today, you need a Lebron. The NBA has spurred this on with all the basketball without borders programs, Team USA playing and in general the sport itself being easy to understand and cheap to play are why it's happening. There are countries completely obsessed with basketball like Lithuania and Philippines where the LeBron drama doesn't really register, they just like the sport itself and the NBA is the highest level of the game.
