Reading this Grantland review of The Leftovers explains the Lost phenomeon perfectly
Basically, for 5 1/2 years it was arguably the most enjoyable TV ever (if you were around the Lost online forums especially.....people who go back and view it on DVD just won't understand). shyt seemed like a complex masterwork and we were continuously promised a satisfying explanation for the show mythology
Instead, in the last half of season 6 it became clear that shyt just wasn't coming together. We still all held our breath that the series finale would find a way to tie up all the loose ends. Instead, we got a heartfelt and touching finale that was satisfying for the characters, but absolute god awful trash for the mythology.
Basically, 6 years of mystery just thrown in the bushes. Major plot points from previous season completely ignored or given half-ass explanations for. It was blatant that the writers had made the whole show up as they went along with no intent on bringing most of it to a good conclusion.
Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse then tried to pull the okie-doke on us and say "the show was all about the characters".....BULLshyt, the island was the star of the show.
fukk, I don't know why I just went on this rant but got damn nothing gets my anger flowing like Lost. I am willing to accept that The Leftovers truly is about the characters and not the mystery disappearance, but I still expect the mystery to be answered eventually otherwise Lindelof will have his 3rd strike (Lost, Prometheus).
