Many of our ancestors are products of rape. But, do you know their names or any information about them?

If so, you can check Will & Probate records. Learn more about them here: United States, Slave Transactions (National Institute) Genealogy - FamilySearch Wiki
African American Probate Records Genealogy - FamilySearch Wiki

For instance, here's Alabama: Alabama Probate Records, 1809-1985 — FamilySearch.org - but all states have them as well.

But, In order to do so - you must know the county and the surname of the enslaver. You can then go look at their "inventory" and you can probably find some of your ancestors listed. They are usually listed with their family or children.

For your Native American ancestors -- have you checked the Dawes Final Rolls | OHS Research Center

Also, do you know if they were enslaved? As the 5 Tribes enslaved Africans/Blacks. I know some people think they have native ancestors -- but really some their ancestors were enslaved by Natives.
I’ll be real. I was born out of wedlock and my mom was too. So the name that I have, isn’t my real bloodline, and it’s murky to ask about old secrets like that. Old heads don’t want to talk about how Aunt Hattie was fast in the day

my stepdads family is out of coffeeville, al, my moms is out of hernando ms, my real dad is from refugio tx, and only know a name for my moms real dad.

For me, I guess it opens up things that I have conditioned myself to not worry about because of how much hurt it has brought over time not knowing.

At least talking on here with you all about it has given me space to think about it, what was the root of my uncomfortableness with it, and think about if it’s really worth it. I think I may try it out. What’s cool is even though I have 13 brothers and sisters mine will be unique as I’m my mom and dads only child

I knew there was a reason I rocked with ya. You got that Sipp blood running in your veins. Plus you from the golden coast as well (f*ck all that talk about any other coast being the golden coast. The gulf coast-AL, TX, MS, FL, LA- is rich in culture and our history, so I call it the golden coast)

This is interesting, I wonder how many of those freedmen left America
Iv always wanted to know why my Surname is Cole
We are the Saro of Nigeria

The Saros left the americas to Sierra Leone and then Nigeria I believe. Saro is a corruption of Salone I think. They were from the carribean and the U.S..

Thanks for sharing that. :hug:No, I understand.

The one thing I wish I would have known before I started was how emotionally draining and somewhat traumatic genealogy research is. One minute you're happy - then you're pissed off and ready to kill someone -- then you're crying and depressed. Repeat cycle.

So, truly ease yourself into the process and take your time. But, most important - take long breaks when researching. Cause it really does bring something to surface.

For myself, my last name is not my bloodline - cause my father took his stepfather's name - even though he was raised around and with his father. You know back then many of the same families all lived on the same road - as they all sharecropped on the same piece of land.

But, my father and aunt were "break babies" during my Grannie and her husband downtimes. And I guess my Grandfather and his wife downtimes too. They all lived next door to each other.

So, all my life I have had a last name that I have no connection too -- other than it was my paternal Grannie's husband and his family.

I didn't find this out till I graduated H.S. and really thought about it one day when I was visiting Alabama for the weekend during undergrad in the AUC. I called my Dad and asked why all our family in his hometown in Alabama last name wasn't the one we carried. Then he told me. It was crazy.

But, I applaud you for thinking about starting the process. And you have a huge family - that's a blessing! I"m the baby of four -- and the :queen: -- so you already know - my siblings just love me. :smh:

All in all, some stuff you will wish you had never found out or saw - but it's many more things you will learn that you will be happy you did.

You just mad because I called you nikkas out for faking the funk. First pages full of multi plat gossip and pawg threads that all you ADOS run into yet here's a thread full of actual resources to help you nikkas get some knowledge and understanding of yourselves and the ancestors y'all keep exploiting in hopes of a check and y'all dodged this thread like it was accountability.

Should have been a sticky from the first post

Seeing my great grandmother's name in the 1930s census raising two boys as a single mother in NJ at the start of the great depression is tough.

Edit: It would take me hours to fully trace it back on both sides. I'm just satisfied with what I've been able to find for now

None of my family(both sides are from SC) neither recently deceased nor far in the past are on this site. :jbhmm:

Recently deceased are not on there. And it depends on not far in the past. My grandparents are on there via the Census when they were children and teens - but not after that. Other than all of their marriage records and my Grandfathers(s) military WWI and II/draft cards.

But, you should be able to find great grandparents and their parents and so on on there.

Nah, tried them too. Oh well.

EDIT: They are on Ancestry.com however.
