The NBA in the 80's must have been boring as hell...

The 80's were fun to watch. Yeah we knew who were going to be in the finals but watching the league grow year by year was great. Back then you loved the game and there were no such things as "stans" or "dikk riders". You were "allowed" to like multiple players and teams WITHOUT abandoning your favorite team. The 80's fans >>>today's "fans" by a long shot. It was also better because we didn't know the player's every move, there was a certain respect and mystique even though some things about them were a bit embellished. Heck, even struggle teams were fun to watch.

Co-sign. I was telling my boy the same thing about us knowing and seeing too much these days...it takes away from the mystique of players because of the information age we are in. We didn't know how terrible the play was around the league in the 80s and early 90s because we were only given certain teams to watch most of the year and marquee matchups. The GOAT struggle team was the Denver Nuggets with Kiki Vandewghe, Michael Adams and Alex English.. *Remembers Michael Adams leaning 2-3 ft to hit 3s* :wow:

Another thing is we learned about the majority of these players and their stats from Upper Deck and Topps trading cards...

I remember getting cards from Terry Cummings or someone from the Bucks and being like "Damn they must be REALLY good"...

You would hardly ever get to see them play outside of TBS...

:ohlawd:

You'd get cards of he and Alvin Robertson and be like "word? They must be nice!!" LOL

Plus...you'd have to find out who won games by getting the paper the next day. And even if you did, some of the west coast scores wouldn't make the final print and by that time, they were already onto the next game.

CBS had the finals late on tape delay! As a kid, it was a nightmare (at least school was out by that time).
NBA on NBC changed everything.

1990 but close enough... Worthy ordered two escorts to come to his hotel room, got popped but got a standing ovation from the fans. :pachaha:

Worthy Is Arrested on Sex Charge : Lakers: Houston vice officers take him into custody hours before game on two counts of solicitation of prostitution.
November 16, 1990|MARK HEISLER | TIMES STAFF WRITER
HOUSTON — Laker star James Worthy was arrested Thursday afternoon on two counts of solicitation of prostitution and was jailed hours before the team's game against the Rockets.

Worthy was released on $500 bail and rejoined his teammates, arriving in the second quarter.

Worthy refused comment on the arrest.

Sgt. Ross Gonzales, a spokesman for the Houston Police Department, gave these details:

"At approximately 2:30 or 3 o'clock, he (Worthy) was arrested by undercover vice officers on two counts of solicitation of prostitution.

"Our understanding is that he contacted an escort service that we monitor. Two of our vice officers responded to the request he made. He arranged a transaction, at which time they made an arrest."

Gonzales said the charge is a Class B misdemeanor under Texas law.

If convicted, Worthy could be fined up to $1,000 and jailed up to 180 days.

"Well, at this point, I really don't have anything to say about it," Worthy said after the game. "The most common thing to say is, 'no comment.' "

Was he aware of the crowd's reaction?

"I heard it but my mind was elsewhere."

There had been no communication between Worthy and his teammates since his arrest, and they didn't know if he'd play in Houston or tonight in Dallas. Indeed, there was speculation among Laker officials that he would fly home instead.

Worthy ran onto the court with 11:23 to play in the half, and the crowd cheered loudly. When he entered the game with 9:41 to play, it cheered again.

"I heard the crowd," Magic Johnson said. "We all looked. There he was. It was beautiful. It was great of them to give him that ovation. That meant a lot.

"Whatever happened, we're not concerned with. He's here. He played. He showed us a lot. He showed how much he cares about us. Everybody makes a mistake in their life but, hey, he's our boy. I still love him, no matter what he did. I just hope everybody can forget it and rally behind him like this crowd."

Coach Mike Dunleavy said that in the dressing room at halftime, "Everybody got together and told James how happy we were he came to the game, that we're all with him."

Said Worthy: "They're the guys I'm with the most. They're the guys who know me best. Any signs like that--I kinda expected it. These are my friends and . . . it happened.

"I didn't want to run away from the situation. I wanted to run to it and play. The best place for me tonight was here."

Was he staying with the team for tonight's game in Dallas?

"Of course," Worthy said. "Got a game."

It's hilarious to hear cats complain about "the same teams dominating". I automatically know they have no knowledge about the league's history...or they are just a bitter stan. :russ: And that's the real issue here. You have so many unhappy, bitter people who just refuse to enjoy the game unless shyt is exactly how they want it to be.

:yeshrug: pretty much if my team is elite and everybody else is average or not dethroning us I could give a fukk about the quality of the league.
