In a league where one player can have such a significant impact, the only way to 100% get rid of any tanking whatsoever is to get rid of drafting based on record. If you don't want to do that then tanking is something you're just gonna have to deal with.

For the record, I do think people exaggerate the tanking issue in the NBA. A lot of times I feel people can't differentiate between a team that's tanking and a team that's genuinely awful.

Yeah, the Sixers aren't tanking this year, they just aren't very good.

YOu must do what it takes, period. Wheel and deal. Don't just sit there and hope a generational player will fall on your lap.

Look at Pat Riley in Miami. Forget that we got lucky with Wade turning into a star. But focus on all the wheeling and dealing he did to keep the team respectable and never be bad for more than 2 years going on 20 years now. He had GUTTED that roster 4 times and quickly rebuilt every time.

Riley is a prob a HoF Execuctive, but most of his moves have been luck based to be honest. Prior to getting Wade, those Heat squads of the 90s were treadmill status. He gets Shaq, I'll give him credit for that. However Wade was a huge reason why Bron came(they really fukk with each other like that).

You fast forward to today, where he gave up two first rounders for Dragic despite being 5+ games below .500 at the time. Not to mention a similar pg in Lawson was had for less this past summer. I'll give him credit for giving Whiteside a two year contract, but Winslow obviously fell to him. Riley is a decent recruiter, but most of his chips are the result of luck, and I'd take Presti and Bufford over him anyday.

there are always going to be shytty teams, its just a reality

I seriously dont get why people are so concerned with the Philadelphia 76ers sucking? Like... who gives a fukk?

and dont compare Minnesota, Philly, Utah, etc to fukking Miami :dead:

You won your titles because Shaq gave the green light to go to Miami, and because Bron/Bosh wanted to go to South Beach

Those other teams dont have that luxury

Riley put in the work that's why he's the don...But there are not 28 great basketball minds like that running around the league...I'm a victim of Chris Grant and the Anthony Bennet 1st overall pick.
But that's my poing. Your job as a GM isn't to sit here and wait on savior draft-picks. You gotta make moves. Sixers pretty much wasted AI's career not getting him much help. Granted not many premier players wanted to play with AI to begin with. But still

In a league where one player makes a huge difference I have no problem with tanking

You can't win a title unless you have a top 3 player and future hofer on your team so why not maximize your chances at getting one?

Again Luck wont just lift you out the dirt. You gotta go out and reach too. Opportunities come and go but unless you take advantage of it what is the point?

Dragic isn't Rileys first blunder. But he keeps trying and trying until something works.
  • I love the dude for his work Ethincs but Brian Grant was a bust for us.
  • Billy Owens was a bust too.
  • Michael Beasley is his biggest bust. Even tho i blame Beasley on Spoelstra because Riley made it clear he didn't want Beasley until Spoelstra, Keith Askins and a bunch of other staff members convinced him into taking Beasley. Riley, on NATIONAL TV on the night of the lottery pretty much told everyone he didn't want that pick.
  • Eddie Jones just didn't work out because of the circumstances of Zo's illness
THAT is what you do. It's not "well we tried this and it failed so lets sit and wait for a miracle pick"

Isnt Philly among the marquee franchises of the NBA along with the Knicks and L.A. and Boston?

Last i checked Miami was an expansion team in the late 80s breh.
Riley came to Miami and saw an opportunity to get a (then) unhappy Alonzo Mourning and Charlotte and he went after it
He saw the same opportunity in L.A. with Shaq and went after him too. Who else gambled to try to get all 3 (Wade, Bosh and LeBron) at the same time? Everyone was hoping to grap 1. He got all 3. I'm sorry but applaud the man's effort for even trying let alone succeeding. Lebron could have gone to NY with all their "infrastructure" as their (then) mayor sulked about. Bosh could have gone and got more cash in CHI or Phoenix or back to his college hometown (ATL). Wade could have easily bolted to CHI.

The man has his track record and it appeals to people. That whole "don" nonsense probably helps too :pachaha: but still. I said it before and i'll say it again: You can just sit and hope for good results. sometimes you gotta make sh!t happen and then things somehow start to turn in your favor.

Im not diminishing Riley whatsoever, he gets shyt done

Im just saying, dont use Miami as a shining example against the idea of tanking. Players want to be in South Beach

Riley wouldnt have been able to get that same Shaq deal done personnel wise if he was running the Utah Jazz. He wouldnt have been able to get Bron/Bosh to sign in Minnesota

Thats what I was getting at

Ugly chicks gotta work a little harder to get the job and the dikk. :manny: I still don't recall players lining up to be in Miami when Rothstein and Loughery were running the team
And don't act like we didn't have fukkin scrubs like Lou Williams sh!tting on us during the 2007 season when we were hot after him and he played us like chumps... for CLEVELAND

Eh, yeah you may be right, but the dynamic of free agency has changed over the years. Teams like Minny/Utah, etc are at a serious disadvantage in how they can build their teams. Free agency is not viable for them, and you wont ever see a star player accepting a trade to go there either

All they basically have is the draft

all I'm saying is if Riley didn't bring his winning mentality to the franchise and put in the work we wouldn't have what we have. We have lost many FAs to other teams for equal or less money. Shaq left us the minute Wade got hurt because be didn't believe Wade would recover and He didn't like that Riley asked him to get in shape and personally monitored his weight. Ive already told you all about how i feel about LeBron leaving. If all it took was a big city, LA, NY and BOS would be getting every free agent. instead you have LMA going to...SAN ANTONIO. I know the Spurs are an exception in this discussion but just saying

Fair enough but most of these moves resulted in treadmill teams. This isn't like baseball, where just about every team has a chance at winning a title, being competitive just to be competitive is silly(see the Grizzlies). The Sixers are tanking to put together a title contender. Hinkie could of went out and signed Rondo and some other role players to improve the win total, however that would of likely resulted in 30ish wins and a mediocre draft pick.

The impact of a star player is tremendous. When you have two stars, your chances of winning a championship increase. Sure teams like the Warriors and Pistons won with 1 or less star players, however those teams had elite defenses and insane depth(in the case for the Warriors). To replicate that is just as hard if not harder than tanking for stars. Look at the T-Wolves, they were garbage and got Towns and we're lucky to get Wiggins for Love. Now the T-Wolves are poised to run the West 2-4 years from now, assuming they can get a solid pg and a 3&D SF(which shouldn't be that hard to get).

So as a paying customer you're okay with the Sixers tanking it the way they are.

I mean let's be real, here. To me those who buy season tickets are partly to blame if they are supporting the nonsense. I'm unhappy with the Dolphins right now and i tell everyone who has season tickets to NOT renew this sh!t until we see change. But if you are fine with long extended rebuild projects go ahead.

Hoard a gang of top picks then later sell em to the highest bidder.

The Sixers can low key decide which teams they want to help get over the hump. Pretenders into contenders, contenders into champions. :ohhh:
