You have the EXACT same feelings about the NFL as I have. I still watch the NFL every week, still follow my Rams, but the overall over saturation of the NFL has really drained my enthusiasm for the game. I enjoy following college football more now than the NFL which never used to be the case. Things like having an NFL Live episode on ESPN everyday in the middle of June and July just fukking kills me. I want to miss the NFL to regenerate my interest when the season starts back up. But the problem is, once the season starts, I won't stop hearing about the NFL every minute on ESPN or other sports stations until February.

But my feelings are still the same about it's popularity, the glory position in the NFL is the QB. And as long as you have Brees, Manning (both), Brady, etc. as the face of these teams, they will gain the interest of the bulk of white america (the majority), and therefore, they will have high ratings.

For the most part the glory position has always been the QB though....its just become more and more of a passing league over the years.

Everyone in America doesn't play basketball, that's a real falsehood if there ever was one.

You may live in an area where everyone balls, but look at football as a whole, not just the NFL.

Football is usually the biggest sport at a high school, especially in certain states. So from early on in life people are told Football is the sport to get behind in America.

Then you look at college, look at the numbers of some of them college games and the stature of some of those college stadiums, 100 thousand people in those places on Saturdays. In college people are reminded of the importance of football.

Then the NFL, and t he super phenomenon that is the Super Bowl. It's a pop culture staple of America, it's the most widely celebrated day outside of any Holiday and it even trumps many Holidays.

Bottom line, you CANT catch the NFL. In doing so you're wasting your time and effort, it's a losing battle. But they can increase their viewership, if i`m Stern I cut down on the teams, 10 teams gone. Make the remaining teams very relevant and everyone be a competitor (another reason the NFL is so popular, parity). Cut your games down to a 30-35 game season.

You do these two things and the game will flourish. fukk tradition at this point, the game needs to evolve to get better,

Most of what you said is true however I gotta take issue with the parity piece. NFL doesn't have as much parity as it is given credit for. Yes more teams have a shot at the SB, no doubt. Yes the NFL has more surprise teams every year. However when it comes down to it each of the last 9 SBs have feature the Pats, Steelers, or Colts. That's pretty comparable to Spurs, Lakers, Mavs in the NBA. The big difference between NFL and NBA is that NBA is star driven. People in general only watch NBA to see their favorite stars. Meanwhile people watch football because like you said it's ingrained in the culture. Being on once a week does give it an event type feel.

I agree that basketball would be better served with making some changes. Definitely have too many teams...24 is a good number. I wouldn't cut the season down to 30 games but 50-60 would be good. The season should start on Christmas day every year and the season could run through May and then the playoffs could run through July that way they capitalize on the dead zone that is the summer. They could do all this and still wont be able to fukk with the NFL for the reasons we've pointed out.

To the 2 bolded, the NFL has parity is in who can win the title though.

Last 5 years you got

NY
Pittsburgh
NO
Green Bay
NY

And the difference is, no one was picking those teams to win the title in any of those 5 years. In the NBA analysts said from day one Heat vs. Thunder and that's exactly what we got.

I see your point the NFL surely does have power-houses, but they rarely come out on top where in the NBA it is a much more predictable sport and the powerhouse are far more powerful and win the titles much more often.

As far as the NBA season goes, I think it starts at entirely the wrong time to begin with. Football dominates the culture, so starting a season in October is foolish for many reasons. No one gives a damn about the NBA during the NFL season, football dominates the attention of the American fan and they also get the MLB playoffs at the same time. Just dumb timing for the NBA.

The NBA should start in February and end in August. That way it gives the fans something to tide them over from football, Baseball is almost never critical during it's run, and when it's finishing up football is just starting again and baseball still has a few weeks to go before the playoffs.

Also b-ball is a summer sport to me, look around the playgrounds, people playing that shyt now. No ones playing ball in December/January unless you got access to a gym

I expected higher ratings too to be honest..that shiit was a major disappointment..Two biggest "stars" in the NBA and we still aint cracked that 20 million.. :birdman:

You know Boss Stern was taking notes. Lebron is not the draw they hoped he'd be, so expect Stern to rig the league to get Jeremy Lin into the finals next season.

Linsanity on Prime Time???

Imagine if the NBA had parity :ohhh:

Basketball doesn't lend itself to parity.

Football does because it is so brutal that injuries take so much of a toll on teams and they have a cap which prevents teams from stockpiling talent, for too long at least. Not to mention its one game, winner take all in the playoffs. Anybody can beat anybody in one game.

Baseball is such an up and down sport. It's so hard to predict because you never know who may be having a great year or whose coming back down to earth and then the teams have such big farm systems that you never know what kinda great talent may be lurking in triple-A somewhere. In the playoffs a hot pitcher can carry you and so many different factors come into play beyond just who is the better team.

In basketball you know who the stars are from the time they are in HS. If you get one of the great ones they you are :win: if you miss out on getting a great one they you are most likely :to: In the other sports you have great players coming from the 6th rd in football and you never know what kind of jewels may come from your farm system in baseball. Individual players have way more impact on the game while in the other sports they are way more dependant on teammates. Injuries play a part but not to the extent they do in football. Players are much more consistent for year to year so you won't see guys have a MVP year and then go back to just being a good player. You see more anamolies in football and baseball whereas basketball is so much more constant.

Pittsburgh is a perennial favorite and GB was picked by many to win in 2010. Whether they were picked or not you still got two Giants titles in 5 years. Baseball has more parity than football (10 champs in 11 years vs. 8 in 11 for NFL) and they still arent' fukking with the NFL. Many of those baseball champs were unexpected but MLB still not fukkin with football. The NBA was at it's highest level of popularity when you had Magic/Bird every year and it carried over into when it was all about Mike. If SB was Bucs/Bengals each of the next 5 seasons it would still have the biggest ratings of any tv show and rank amongst the greatest of all time each year. Meanwhile we could see a different matchup in the Finals each of the next 5 years and I guarantee we wouldnt' see a ratings surge.

I agree about basketball being a summer sport but they would have to be careful about having the Finals swallowed up by football. NFL and NCAA pretty much own August even though you don't get any real action until the end of the month. Not to mention Christmas Day basektball is :ahh:.

August gets the hype of the NFL, but nothing airs nationally really.

Christmas day basketball never meant much to me because I don't celebrate that holiday, but I understand how it`d be cool for fans.

But after x-mas day basketball is a non-thought.

Right now people would kill to have some basketball on
