We call it 'working roots' or hoodoo. Growing up, I had several neighbors into it (and latinos into Santeria). One of my mother's friends from NC told a story- I can't recall the details- but end result: a whole gang of puppies came out of some ladies cooch.
I knew somebody else whose leg started swelling up crazy and dr's couldn't figure it out. After a while, she was reminded that she had visited a friend that had powders in front of her door. Took about two yrs to find somebody who could break the bad juju.
