Someone compared Bernie Williams stats with Kirby Puckett stats and it was a lot closer than one might have thought.

Does Bernie belong in the HOF? Maybe.
But it’s strange how Kirby was a no brainer and Bernie is thought of as a fringe guy for the Hall.
I remember seeing something about them awhile back. And I was also surprised at the numbers. I think Bernie is hurt in the same way Mattingly is but without the injuries. Like Mattingly without the injuries and still no WS title probably goes in.

Bernie with the WS titles his current or close stats but a career cut short by injuries probably gets over the hump. Instead he's probably just treated like a cog in the Yankees machine of the time

I think Puckett was a no brainer. But I think being the cornerstone of a small market team. With great stats and 2 WS titles ups his legacy. Also add in Puckett losing his career in his prime due to the eye injury. He probably eclipses 3k hits, maybe 300/400 hrs without it.

Kirby at his peak was a better player.

We as Yankee fans feel like we owe something more to Bernie than retiring #51 because we feel like he's been so underappreciated. We'd rather overrate him than underrate him at this point.

Swap Bernie and Kirby. Are the Twins still winning a ring? NBA logic!

Kirby Puckett's peak WAR season: 7.1
Bernie Williams peak WAR season: 6.4

Sure, Kirby is higher but not by some outrageous amount.

The perception difference comes from Puckett getting more hits, while Bernie getting more walks.

Also, Puckett was done at 35. It's not likely he was going to remain a superstar into his late 30s even though he was still all-star level.

If I shave off Bernie's 1st two seasons and his last 2 seasons, he averaged .305/.392/.498 and 4.8 WAR per 162 games.
Compared to Kirby's entire career he averaged .318/.360/.477 and 4.6 WAR per 162 games.

I didn't shave off any years for Kirby because he had a 12 year career and Bernie had a 16 year career, so discounting Bernie's 1st two and last 2 seasons made sense -- given that Bernie wasn't even a regular until 1993 anyway and eliminating the last two years of Bernie's career uses his final season at age 35 --- which is the same final season for Kirby.

Good.
Eff a salary cap.

If yall want one, tell the owners to open the books.

They want players to accept a cap but they aren’t allowed to see how much revenue is coming in. The owners don’t even want to define what “revenue” is.

I made a thread about Trevor May talking about this.

I think Kirby without the eye injury plays until he's 40. He was always a high ba guy. So, I think he'd probably lose his doubles, but maintain his hitting ability to get on base. He never had wow power so 300 hrs vs 400 seems more likely with at least 5 more seasons on the book.

On the 12 year to year they are even closer. That's crazy. Bernie has a case for being one of those guys being bushed off the list too soon.
