It was definitely there, you must've just been rushing through it. The anime doesn't skip a thing, if anything it drags shyt out.

How many episodes do I have to watch in order to switch over?

I would switch over after marineford. Fishman island in the anime is garbage, the only thing dope about it is the end events but it drags to get to that point like you wouldn't believe.

I stepped off the anime to read the manga during the Thriller Bark arc. After that I went back to the anime till the end of Punk Hazard which had me So now I'm on the manga only. I'll probably hit up the anime for big fights only.

I'd suggest using mangastream since they're pretty much the supplier of the only good scanlations of the series at present, and most likely have the best scans in their archive along with it.
