a rare article on boxing i came across about boxing's underrated fighters of today

Y! SPORTS

COMMENTARY | In boxing, achieving true stardom often has just as much to do with outside-the-ring controversy as it does with in-ring proficiency. However, there are fans that couldn't care less about tabloid boxing gossip and just want to follow honest, earnest fighters guaranteed to execute at the highest levels of the sport.

Here is an updated list of ten fighters casual fans should know, but probably don't:

Lucas Matthysse (33-2, 31 KOs)

The heavy-handed battler from Argentina was originally brought to America as a durable B-side, but proved himself capable of competing at the highest levels of the jam-packed junior welterweight division. Controversial decision losses to Zab Judah and Devon Alexander did little to hurt Matthysse's standing and he now stands on the precipice of the big world title shot he always deserved. This Saturday, May 18, he will face another tough underrated talent, Lamont Peterson, for the right to move ahead to a world title challenge.

Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KOs)

The affable, gentlemanly boxer from Kazakhstan is a complete killer in the ring and has developed a loyal cult following because of his offensive prowess. Golovkin holds the fairly worthless WBA middleweight title, but has yet to truly face a world class challenge. This June, though, all of that changes when he meets former world title challenger Matthew Macklin in his biggest challenge to date.

Mikey Garcia (31-0, 26 KOs)

Trainer Robert Garcia's little brother is a stone cold featherweight assassin in the ring, a calm and collected hunter with precision punching and nearly perfect technique. Wins over WBO featherweight champ Orlando Salido and former titlist Jonathan Victor Barros put Garcia in the "for real" category. A win over Juan Manuel Lopez this June could make the 25-year-old champ a star.

Kubrat Pulev (17-0, 9 KOs)

It's hard for a Bulgarian heavyweight to get any recognition among American fans, but followers of the heavyweight division would do well in keeping an eye on "The Cobra." The reigning European heavyweight champ and current no. 1 contender for Wladimir Klitschko's IBF title, holds solid wins over several top journeymen and looks to have the size and all-around ability to be a true force in the division.

Leo Santa Cruz (24-0-1, 14 KOs)

Few fighters are as fun to watch as the 24-year-old former IBF bantamweight titlist. Showing a near-perfect mix of toughness and Mexican boxing technique, Santa Cruz is a punching machine in the ring, battering opponents to both the head and the body with precision shots. A recent move up to junior featherweight should bring some more interesting and entertaining battles for the young fighter.

Roman Gonzalez (34-0, 28 KOs)

"El Chocolatito" is Nicaragua's fighting pride and one of boxing's pound-for-pound best offensive fighters. A two-division world champ at just 25, Gonzalez already has a stunning 10-0 record in world title bouts.

Denis Lebedev (25-1, 19 KOs)

Russia's cruiserweight powerhouse seemed on his way to divisional dominance when his career was sidelined by a very controversial split decision loss to Marco Huck and further stalled by WBA champ, Guillermo Jones' total unwillingness to step into the ring with him. Since then, the vacated WBA belt was placed in his possession and, this Friday, he is set to face former champ Jones to affirm his status as "real" champ.

Miguel Vazquez (33-3, 13 KOs)

"Titere" Vazquez came to prominence with the dubious distinction of being the rarest of all breeds-- a slick, Mexican boxing stylist. Since winning the vacant IBF lightweight title in 2010, the native of Guadalajara has made five defenses of his belt, most recently embarrassing undefeated Mercito Gesta in a completely one-sided romp.

Yoan Pablo Hernandez (27-1, 13 KOs)

Cuban-born German resident, Hernandez, is the reigning IBF cruiserweight champ and has earned the distinction of top cruiser in the world with victories over Troy Ross, Steve Herelius and two wins over former champ Steve Cunningham.

Juan Francisco Estrada (24-2, 18 KOs)

If Estrada had not scored the major upset in Macau, China over Brian Viloria in April, this spot would've likely gone to the rugged, talented Viloria. Instead, the 23-year-old native of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico earned his fair share of attention after a tough and well-fought split decision win. Now, the newly-crowned WBO and WBA flyweight champ moves on to another big challenge against the talented and undefeated Milan Melindo in July.

I feel you. but look at the pic @HamAndEgger posted. Oscar was out of shape and shouldnt have tried to lose weight so fast in the first place. Floyd and Manny never look like that. Neither does Bernard...even though Bernard is looking a lil softer. Oscar was weight drained, no doubt. even if he wasnt, he was in for it. dude has no head movement and needs a stationary target to punch at. where's that floyd gif?

I knew Oscar was gonna get beat to a pulp when his pad work on 24/7 looked like shyt compared to his Floyd Sr days, he completely lost his speed, and punching technique regressed he was drained to death, and probably coked out also.......................

exactly. he missed Floyd Sr. although I still dont think the outcome would be much different if he wasnt weight drained (because he had lost so much) I wont argue that he was. he was out of shape and weight drained.

:deadmanny: at fools gold... Pac was coming all the way from 135 breh.. how could anyone predict the asswhoopin that took place in that ring that night...

this nikka act like weight means something absolute. check this breh....Shane Mosley came from 135, he fought 2 fights at WW, one was a garbage opponent, the other was C-level and next fight he beat prime Oscar at 147...so u really wasnt paying attention by thinking that Pac wasnt gonna beat him when he was slow, drained, had terrible defense and was getting touched up by the feather-fisted 2 Pound Forbes. (for the record, I picked Shane to beat Oscar both times, Oscar has a problem with speed because he is stationary a lot)

that fight was ALLLLLLLLLL Hype!!!! DLH name carried the odds. Like I said, SRL was favored to beat Norris and Camacho and nearly got killed both times. The Camacho fight was really ridiculous because SRL hadnt fought in 6 years! My point is, when you have stars like DLH, SRL, Tyson, people held on to their memories of them when they were great, plus u had a lot of casuals who :udontknow:

as I said...you may not have knew it but I did. I had taken a break from posting on boxing during that time so I can pull it up but I picked Pac by UD or late round KO. Speed differential was too great considering Pac throws a lot of punches and Oscar dont move his head. the one thing I will say is, I didnt expect him to beat him that bad from the beginning of the fight.

I think he quit too, not sure about the dive, but that KO was suspect as hell. whether it was a dive or he just gave up. havent seen the fight in a while but he was making Khan miss. he was getting hit too but never like he was against Garcia. at best that was a DLH-Hopkins dive.

Even if he didnt dive, it makes zero sense for Zab to be rewarded and thrown right back in the championship fold, after that quit job as if he was rewarded; Rewarded for what exactly, for being a good boy and laying down for Khan I'm 100% sure of it

from the home of coca-cola, i'm not referring to s
at this point, I am only responding to poke holes in your theories. everyone here knows I am on the record for saying Floyd is part to blame...but you want to absolve Pac from all responsibility and just call Floyd a spineless coward.
Ive already said Pac fukked up when he chose to not do the unlimited tests back in 09...they both fukked up... the differnce is there was way more money at stake and a much greater demand for that fight when Floyd fukked up

Konz is just as his name suggest. Another liar and con artist. He says "THE FINAL OFFER ON THE TABLE was $50 mil guarantee and 45-55 split". Who's offer? Did the Mayweather camp agree to that? Obviously not. Pac agreed to $40 mil split at first but wouldnt agree to drug testing...then when he agreed to drug testing he wanted $10 million more guarantee! So if I take this drug test, I need more money in other words Then Konz says Manny agreed to take less than 50% but says he didnt interpret it right....lol...and that he wasnt there (to keep his ass from fukkin up I assume). If he didnt interpret that right then how do we know he knew :wtf: they were saying at the beginning of that first video? Manny dont know how to speak English good. Which is why Konz said he needs to be there before he starts yappin. Then Konz goes on to talk about how Manny is a politician...how ironic.

:wtf: the fukk are you babbling about?
Where did Manny ever agree to "a 40 mill split" that's just dumb... then you say Manny asked for 10 mill more guarantee?? Then he would do the bloodtesting?? :what: you're either bored and trolling me or you're just making this shyt up in your head... if not cite your source sir.... the 50 million guaranteed purse plus 45/55 revenue was the counter offer to Floyd where Floyd declined obviously because Floyd wants to keep all the revenue. ..

You asked for me to cite where Pacquiao agrees to blood testing.. In the first video he's clearly saying that he's agreeing to Mayweathers testing demands all the way up to the fight no cuttoff..

The second video has nothing to do with the first video other than Koncz confirming that blood testing wasn't the problem..

FMJ said he would wire $20 mil to Pac account within 72 hours but Konz had to fly out to talk about it first.

If FMJ wasnt offering a percentage of his PPV to anybody, why would he offer it openly to a guy (who you say hadnt lost but to Morales in recent years) who arguably lost 4 fights to Marquez and didnt get a decision against Bradley. Manny could easily be a 9 loss fighter if he wasnt so popular and for hopes of keeping a FMJ fight afloat.
the problem with you is you lack focus... now where does Floydie ever openly offer Pac a ppv percentage... and for the last time, when Pac was offered the 40 mill flat therBradley and Roidquez 4 hadn't happened yet... he would actually have to lose 9 fights to be a 9 loss fighters... but I guess there's a conspiracy theory behing that too right :skip:
Hell, he owes his victory against JMM in the 3rd fight to FMJ and should send him a gift because I didnt watch that fight live (one of my periods where I was disgusted and didnt want to see that shyt) but out of all the people that came to me and asked did I see the fight....I said no....but who do you think won...not ONE person said Pac.

I personally thought the fight shoulda been a draw, which means it coulda gone either way.. The reason Roidquez let it slip out his hands was because in the later roubds Nacho told him to be conservative since he was ahead on the cards, thinking they would just get the decision.. I hope you actually saw the fight and aren't just going off heresay

what are you guys picks for this weekend?

I pick Peterson by UD. Its a pick em fight though.

I cant say about the Alexander fight because I have never seen Purdy.

I cant say about Mosley fight with certainty either because I only seen Cano against Morales and Paulie. I will go with Mosley by UD though.
