I went into
Hallow Road 100% blind. I just saw some people mention it as a pleasant surprise and gave it a shot. If I know more about it, I probably wouldn't have watched. It's not my style of horror. But I gave it a shot off the strength of Rosamund Pike in a lead role, and was pleasantly surprised. This wasn't half bad.
I don't suggest watching the trailer, because it gives away a bit too much. But just in case:
Two parents enter a race against time when they receive a distressing late-night phone call from their daughter after she caused a tragic car accident.
The premise is stressful as hell as it is. Two parents get a call from their daughter who's a bit hysterical and has been in a car accident that could have serious repercussions. The movie basically covers the parents (Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys) as they drive to their daughter, with her on speaker phone. It's two super-talented actors acting their asses off.
Now, I typically find this set gets dry. This one does stretch a couple of segments a few minutes longer than necessary. But it also hits some surprises that always managed to keep me curious about what would happen next. There are multiple points where my heart legitimately sank.
It culminated with a memorable conclusion that I'll be reflecting on for a while. I wasn't scared, but I sure as hell felt stressed.
It won't be for everyone, but I really liked this!
