MARVINS IS CLOSED?!? :sadbron:

That’s how I felt when I found out about that shyt ITT :mjcry: Both it and Twins Jazz are gone smdh. I remember on any given night pre-Covid, those two venues would have live music playing from bands and soloists and the music would seep out into the streets and I fukking loved that shyt :wow: It’s how I imagined what the scene of U Street sounded like during the Black Broadway days or how Harlem sounded during the Harlem Renaissance era.

Although I'm a transplant too I think that anyone who moves to DC past High School age will never get Go-Go. It worked for DC nikkas because we grew up on it and it was always parties where it was being played. Like Other cities had rappers who might be popping in their town every neighborhood in DC had at least one band.

It was like you didn't matter if you didn't get shouted out by a band on a tape. I remember Years later I was driving around in Fayetteville NC and they played the Backyard Budweiser song (That's another thing there were no songs shyt just melded into each other) and I heard my name shouted out on the record. Their bassist used to live up the street from me.

That’s another thing I love about GoGo culture. Because of how intrinsic it is in a lotta neighborhoods, I’ve seen more consistent and sincere community outreach and involvement from GoGo band members and their crews than a lot of these rappers ever had.

For the Baltimore heads, what would you say are the up and coming neighborhoods. Trying to invest down there.

GoGo had a NYC fanbase going back to the early 80s

Video Music Box used to play Chuck Brown, Trouble Funk, E.U. and this Redds and the Boyz video Movin' and Groovin':

Definitely. Many people don’t know that GoGo helped to contribute to the early development of Hip Hop when the art form was still in its infancy and even helped it transition into the new school version brought in by artists like Doug E. Fresh, Biz Markie, Run-DMC, Salt-n-Pepa, etc. Hell, New Jack Swing wouldn’t even exist if it wasn’t for GoGo either :wow:

It’s interesting that GoGo fell outta favor with a lotta New Yorkers as the 90’s approached. Prolly had something to do with the drug game going on and the heavy resistance coming outta DC and PG towards NYCers on that drug trade/street tip coming down trying to set up shop. Hence New Yorkers calling GoGo “jungle music” and DC nikkas calling Hip Hop “that New York bamma shyt”. That level of animosity turned NYCers off from fukking with GoGo and DMV folks from fukking with anything NYC (with exceptions such as Bad Boy and some of the 80’s veterans) for a hot minute.

Bmore folks don’t frequent this thread often since this is a DMV thread but I’m curious about this as well.

@BmoreGorilla @gabbo @Problematic Pat @NeoSeeker should be able to help you out better

I'd have to know his budget and also whether or not he's trying to rent out, or do a house flip.

If I was in that game I'd look in brewers hill, Canton, and federal hill in that order. Maybe fells point too but it can be surprisingly expensive.

$200K-$250 range will be a fixer upper in those areas before you can even rent it out. A lot of stuff that's ready to rent out will go for $300k-$500k range (distance from the water/harbor, parking pad, garage).

If he's trying to rent out in those areas yuppies demand exposed brick in Thier rowhomes.

Columbia, elkridge, and Owings mills are all worth looking at too since he can get some well paid government workers and contractors to rent out his place.

NYC Hip Hop and DC GoGo were basically first cousins in the early 80s. No two regions were closer to one another musically during those years than NY and DC because of that relationship.

Trouble Funk was signed to Sugarhill Records. The Junkyard Band was on Def Jam Records with LL Cool J and Public Enemy.

Spike Lee goes to E.U. for "Da Butt" in School Daze.

Kurtis Blow collabed numerous times with Trouble Funk.

Hip Hop became less musician-driven as the 90s hit, so forms like GoGo became less compatible. Black music youth tastes also narrowed during the 90s, and through the 2000s up until now.

And commercial rap became a global phenomenon while GoGo remained DMV local.

Exactly. Go-Go bands generally repped their neighborhood (at least until they got big enough to be all city) you could even say that Northwest based Bands sounded differently than Southeast bands.

U street is gonna be hella gentrified at this point. It's gonna be Adams Morgan south.
